I'm writing code yes, doesn't necessarily have to involve coding but it often does. There are a few reasons, but I think the biggest issue I have with my current job is it doesn't really seem like a good fit. I have a computer science degree but I initially wanted to do something with games and shockingly (sarcasm) it was hard to find something right out of college. I work in the chemistry department at a university. right now I'm managing 5 labs. it's very laid back. not as impressive as it sounds. by "managing" I don't mean that I'm in charge of anyone, just that I keep those labs stocked during the week and make sure the instructors have all the stuff they need for their students.

I have taught in the past but I'm not currently right now. wish I was. I'd really like to teach again, I enjoyed it more than anything else I've done. but I'm not qualified to teach as a career yet so that's a goal I'd sort of like to work toward as I can. I can still teach an odd class or two in the meantime for experience but that's not something I can do indefinitely.

some people want me to go to pharmaceutical but I'm very unlikely to accept any offers except as a last resort. I don't like research very much so I'm unlikely to stay in academia unless it's primarily in an instructing position.

if you want to teach anywhere from K to 12 normally it requires at least a bachelor in education which I don't have. if you want to teach at a community college you normally need a master's degree of some kind -- usually in the subject you wish to teach but there is a bit of wiggle room. you can get an MAT at certain schools which is like a 1 year degree and is just a teaching focused master's program. normally you can take this plus your bachelor's degree in whatever subject and teach at the community college level in that subject (example if I get my MAT I could probably get a job teaching at a community college in chemistry).

if you want to teach at the university level it's a little bit complicated.

from what I understand to have an actual position as a full time instructor you need to have a doctorate in the relevant subject. I could be wrong about this since there's lots of different fields of study and I am only familiar with one. it also seems like most professors do research on top of teaching but this may be a chemistry or just a science thing in general.

HOWEVER

if you are a "student" you can do student teaching which is like... depending on the field varies a lot. in chemistry for example -- I'm a qualified lab instructor (only takes about one semester to get qualified as long as your shadowing experience goes well) and so as long as I'm considered a full time student then I can teach lab courses. it's not just a glorified "grade the professor's paperwork" thing either, there's not even any oversight. it's literally just me with my 22 students. I give lectures and I supervise them in the lab. requires safety training as well for this very reason but that's seriously like a 1 hour investment. these positions are basically held by graduate students and sometimes undergrad so it's not really something you continue doing. for example I'm not a full time student anymore so it's not something that I am eligible to do. it puts me in this weird position where I wish that I was still able to teach but I just can't. although if I start an MAT program I'd probably take classes full time to get it over with quickly and I presume I'd be able to teach during that time. hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it was mandatory considering it is a teaching program.

also thanks for the welcome! it's good to see you as well. we definitely haven't talked in a while. actually around the time I migrated off the board I don't remember seeing you actively post much at all.

anyway keep in mind the conditions for teaching usually vary by state and there are lots of exceptions especially with private schooling. so while my information might not be totally accurate for your friend it might be a good baseline. the best thing he can do is just to go university web sites and check the job pages to see what qualifications they want.

oh yeah there is also some kind of certification for K-12 teachers but I honestly cannot remember what it is called. at least there is in the state where I live. I believe it's a state by state determined basis. I learned about it a few years ago when I was taking some fundamentals of education course but I'm completely drawing a blank now.

@MariaTaylor I figured the requirement for teaching would be a little more complicated the higher the level of education. Thanks for clearing that up! And yeah that definitely makes sense, my friend was looking into teaching high school. Did you prefer the lab teaching that you were doing or are you pretty open to whatever teaching you qualify for?

I don't post that much even now so that hasn't changed! I think the last time we spoke was over private message, maybe around the time you were leaving. I don't use aim much these days, but if you've got discord I just recently got that.

hm, that's tough to answer. I like both. I really enjoy giving lectures, but I also really like supervising in the lab. for me watching over students in the lab barely even feels like a job. it's sort of like showing up for mandatory time to hang out with your friends. giving lecture is the time when you can really make the most impact though and I enjoyed doing that as well. I think my enthusiasm and the fact that I was actually trying to help made a huge difference. there were a good number of lab instructors who only did it because they had to, or for the money. where for me I just did it because I wanted to teach. like, you'd see people just come in and read powerpoint slides. yikes. my student's class average in the last lab where I taught was 8 points higher on the final than the overall class average and I don't think this was a coincidence. all of the classes go to a big stadium together and take the final at the same time, which I did not have any hand in grading.

some students learn better from a good lecture, others who just have to read it themselves from the book, and then students who learn stuff through hands on methods. so I think being able to give a lecture and then manage the same group in the lab so they can learn how the information applies to the real world with real experiments is really cool.

it's fairly common in a community college for a chemistry or biology instructor to run their own lab section which is directly linked to their lecture period. it's because there aren't really grad students at community colleges to run the lab sections for them. for this and other reasons I think I'd actually be pretty excited to go to a community college and teach.

also...

yeah I'm on Discord but I'm trying to keep it separate from b8 at least for now. when I still used AIM I think I had like 100 people on my buddy list that I never talked to. the whole thing was just cluttered. right now I have a small group of people that I mostly keep in touch with for tabletop gaming and other stuff and I'd rather leave it like that for the time being. if that changes I'll let you know.

I went a different route. After graduating I didn't feel prepared to jump into a dev role. I got a "High school diploma required" job doing tech support. Then after 6 months I at least had something to put on a resume to show I was a decent employee. Used that to get a job in support at a really cool company where I liked the culture. After about 9 months, I was able to move away from the phones and into a more technical role doing data conversions. Just officially got hired as a junior dev after doing conversions for a little over 2 years.

After having a ton of responsibility and being grossly overworked for a while, I'm pretty stoked for my job to basically be "just learn all the things" for a while.

@MariaTaylor that makes a lot of sense. I definitely benefit a lot from a good lecture or a good lab instructor when I was in college. As an auditory learner it was really nice to get someone who was good at that. Both sound like good fits for your personality so yeah would definitely be cool for you to get an opportunity like that in that he future. Not only that but you sound like you're pretty damn good at the job

No worries man, I'll just see you around the topics or private messages and such. That's more or less how my aim is these days too BTW. Last time I talked to someone at length on aim I think it was Mumei, years ago

what devs do is really dependent upon where you work, but it generally means building and keeping any number of marginally useless things running, as well as interpreting and providing sanity checks for less technical people

over time i've gained more and more appreciation for salespeople, who are the actual lifeblood of a company if you're building a business-to-business product, as well as marketers & product managers, who are the actual lifeblood of a company if you're building a business-to-consumer product

edit: also a lot of time is wasted researching new technologies. i hate that part
