I'm writing code yes, doesn't necessarily have to involve coding but it often does. There are a few reasons, but I think the biggest issue I have with my current job is it doesn't really seem like a good fit. I have a computer science degree but I initially wanted to do something with games and shockingly (sarcasm) it was hard to find something right out of college. I just found whatever job I could and got my current one.

I went a different route. After graduating I didn't feel prepared to jump into a dev role. I got a "High school diploma required" job doing tech support. Then after 6 months I at least had something to put on a resume to show I was a decent employee. Used that to get a job in support at a really cool company where I liked the culture. After about 9 months, I was able to move away from the phones and into a more technical role doing data conversions. Just officially got hired as a junior dev after doing conversions for a little over 2 years.

After having a ton of responsibility and being grossly overworked for a while, I'm pretty stoked for my job to basically be "just learn all the things" for a while.

Sounds like everything worked out for you in the end.

CVS must have been super s*** if you prefer Walgreens.

I've worked there for 4 years now (been a Manager for 3) and I can't stand it. I'd quit my job if the fear of being homeless wasn;t a thing.

I have definitely been trapped in the world of private businesses, would be neat to see an out

He probably means that at his job the sales people are terrible and ruin everything, like at most companies. That's been my experience at least, until my current company which actually has great sales people.

Well, most of my reasons for liking Walgreens better may just apply to the CVS/Walgreens I worked at than the overall business. However, there were a few things where that shouldn't have made a difference.

- Walgreens had more breaks
- Walgreens also pays for your breaks
- Walgreens has better insurance
- Furthermore, Walgreens has part time insurance which CVS does not
- Walgreens had better discounts for their employees on stuff
- Walgreens usually had better prices overall anyway
- Walgreens was a lot more flexible with hours

Now, the following stuff I'm going to mention may have just been store specific.

My CVS was horribly understaffed, yet felt like they were fully staffed. That being the case we had no photo person and most of the time no stocking person. So I had to do both in addition to being the cashier. This was a problem during the day, night and especially overnight shifts. At Walgreens overnight shifts usually had 3 people so someone could always be up front, not so at CVS. At CVS it was just me and a shift lead, so I was responsible for the entire store AND the customers.

So basic rundown of my night.
First I have all the returns from all day because often times no one wanted to do them. By the time I finish that everyone but the overnight shift lead is leaving. So I begin straightening up the entire store, often times with no help. Every time we had a customer I would have to stop what I was doing to go greet them and then back to w/e aisle I was on. Every time they were ready to check out I had to stop what I was doing, go ring them up, back to the aisle.

After straightening the entire store, which took quite a while, I had bathroom duty which was one of the only times the shift lead would take care of the customers and only then because you can't hear them needing assistance from the bathroom. After that I have to clean up the parking lot while watching for customers. Then vacuuming the entire store, again customers. Then mopping + customers. Then stocking shelves + customers. Then after a long night of doing almost everything myself I get to be told how slow I'm doing everything and to try better the next night.

So the next night I try to move quicker in the straightening as that's what takes the longest. When I'm done the shift will do a quick check of each aisle to make sure I did ok. So each thing that was found that I missed I must be called over to it, lectured about moving too quickly and missing stuff, and then told to do better next time. Instead of just moving the product yourself you have to stop me from what I'm doing, make me come all the way over there, and then show it to me. What's worse, is some nights they would just tell me I missed something on a particular aisle and tell me to go find out what it is before getting back to what I was doing.

CVS was an awful AWFUL job. The only good thing I have to say about it was the overall Store manager was a really good guy, but they still refused to hire any extra people to help.

@banananor
@foolm0r0n

Well, basically, where I work the product pretty much sells itself.

I don't exactly have visibility into the sales conversations, but we are inundated with emails from people wanting to integrate with us.

We extract data from every relevant veterinary practice management system in existence (well, the ones that will play nice anyway, which is...mostly all of them) and provide an API to businesses who want to sell any type of data service to veterinarians.

It's basically a situation where we just succeed because we did it first and everyone else has to play catch up.

Not sure. Most of the time they'd schedule me for like 7 to 7 and a half hours and then only give me a lunch break. Whereas at Walgreens I got 2 breaks (1 lunch 1 not) for a 6 hour shift and 3 breaks for an 8 hour shift. During the very rare occasions where I did actually work 8 hours at CVS I was told I wasn't paid for breaks, so again not sure.
