Putting aside the obvious factors of loving my wife and marriage:

I'm currently in the process of secretly buying her a car, and I don't think I was convincing with my answers to the "where have you been?" and "why were you gone so long?" questions.

At one point, I swear she looked at me with narrowed eyes, and I asked her "why are you looking at me like that?" and she was all "Like what? Paranoid?!"

I'm 99% sure she knows I'm planning a surprise for her, but man the stress of lying to her is worse than I expected, lmao.

I honestly have to wonder if your wife trusts you if you can't ever be out late unannounced without getting a bunch of s***.

"Where have you been?" is hardly "a bunch of s***".

And then if your answer to that perfectly legitimate question is to be shifty and obviously lying, it's not a surprise to that your wife might not trust what you're saying.

Nah I go out late all the time.

It's just these last few days I couldn't really think of a very good excuse to go alone. Like I said, nerves got me and I said "I'm going to checkout a Craigslist trade", but that sounds weird when I end up gone for 3 hours with nothing to show for it multiple times.

If I get home late because I hung out with the guys after work, it's never a big deal. We have our set date night (Sunday) and understand that work might cause some late nights on other days. I can't imagine a guy dealing with 20 questions because he got home 90 minutes late from work.

I don't think "why are you late" counts as 20 questions.

If I'm 60 minutes or so late I get a phone cask checking if I'm alive. Which is fair imo.

We're down to one car right now (we sold hers when she got stationed in Korea for a year two years ago), and she's mentioned to me she always wanted a certain car, and her dad told me as a kid she always wanted this car.

So I'm getting her that car.

@TheRock1525, I know you're a car guy. I am NOT but I'm thinking about upgrading and giving my 2007 Camry to my dad. In terms of new vs used, what do you think is generally the best value? A slightly used car? A five-year-old car? Do you recommend buying from a dealer or trying to work a deal with a private seller?

My dad helped me buy my last car and I'm pretty damn clueless about this.

I'd find it entertaining if some rich dude wandered to all the car sellers in the country, bought the car, drove it for a second, and then sold it to them for used.

Used is always better value because you can use websites like Kelly Blue Book to argue true value (whether it be through a used car dealer or private party).

Don't be afraid to ask for a VIN so you can do a carfax. Also don't be afraid for have a mechanic you trust look over the vehicle. Make sure you know everything reasonably well about how much insurance will cost, if you need a loan, etc. All can be determined from a VIN.

As for how old a car you want, that's really not as important as mileage and use. I've sold 1999 cars that only had 23,000 miles of them that I would trust more than my current higher mileage newer cars I drive. And I especially trust cars that aren't based out of states that get heavy snowfall cause they have significantly less rust (rusty brake-lines are the most dangerous).

Keep in mind, though, you asking a guy who's never bought a used/new car before in his life. I just fix and sell them. Or fix and drive them.

Alternatively, surprise her with flowers and ask the store if they can make a big bow for you. Some flower shops have huge wired ribbon on hand [for major holidays] and can whip up a bow on demand. You might also want to call in advance to see if they can provide this service for you.

marriage pro-tip

whenever your wife asks where you've been, respond by saying "don't worry about it" with a big smile and give her a wink. Makes you look mysterious and seem like hot property and sounds a lot better than "I fell asleep on the break room couch after work"

I didn't end up buying a bow, but it worked out perfectly.

My wife and her dad wanted to go to Sam's Club, so I went with them with the money inside an Xbox headset box I said I was going to return

They went inside, I went and bought it and parked it right next to our car.

I met them in the store, and after we left she saw the Bug next to our car and said "aww that's a cute Beetle"

And I pulled out the keys and said

"You like it? Wanna drive it?"
