Apollo's probably going to be around 15 hours for SoJ. It'll be close because Phoenix has three cases to Apollo's two, but one of them's the intro case.

It's probably the longest intro case, though. (Aside from E2-1, which doesn't count, imo.)

6-2 and 6-6 I think are pretty close, so it'll be a matter of if 6-1 + 6-3 + the short Phoenix section in 6-5 beats 6-5, and I think it does. And I think 6-6 is a little bit longer than 6-2 anyway if I had to guess, though I've been wrong about these things before.

Oh right, Phoenix takes a chunk out of 6-5 for himself, even if it's only a small piece.

I guess I need to make an allotment for Athena's brief playable role in 5-1, too.

Yeah, I would assume you're counting Athena's part in 5-1 and Apollo's part in 5-4 for those characters respectively

Aside from Maya in 2-4 and I guess Lamiroir in 4-4, is Phoenix in 6-5 the only time you take control of a character but do not play as them in court?

Anyway, 5-6 investigation day 2 complete! Our first stop is the orca pool, which has been mostly drained so the police can investigate it. Unfortunately, no matter how much we try to prod Fulbright, he makes us wait until later. He also gives us Sasha's medication to give to her when we visit her later. Very interesting thing here: When they try to guilt him into telling them Blackquill's strategy and say it's only fair, he does his typical "Oh no what's the most just thing to do?" Athena says she detects confusion. He is capable of fabricating emotional responses to a degree when it suits him, although 5-5 also seems to indicate he can't totally control it either.

Next up: Meeting Dr. Crab. His intro is great because Athena just barges into his lab, and he gets angry at her for it. He tells her to go back out, knock on the door, and politely wait to be let in. We're also introduced to his version of the frocobo with Sniper. He tells us some stuff about what he does at the aquarium as the resident vet and the fancy gadgets he has, but that's about it for now.

Following that, we have an odd conversation with Norma. She tells us about the trainer who preceded Sasha who was supposedly killed by the orca the year before. If you present her book to her, Athena will admit that it's very well written. Norma says she won't refuse an autograph to anyone who wants it as long as they've actually read the book, and she says she might have to learn Athena's name since she's displaying such fine taste. However, even after Athena tells her her name, Norma says she addressed the autograph "to banana girl" because she just can't get past all the yellow. Tough break.

Then there's a strange conversation about the Swashbuckler Spectacular song. Norma and Athena both disagree on how the song goes, so...we get two imagine spot cutscenes of them both singing their versions of the songs. It's kinda weird that they animated something that isn't actually happening for (what I assume) the express purpose of letting Athena cosplay in pirate outfits and show off her midriff. Anyway, this is our first big hint that there are two orcas because Sasha said Orla only knows one song.

We return to the orca pool to finally investigate, and Pearl says she'd like to do some "forensicking" with us. Of course you can! How could we say no to you? We use a hoist to lower us down low into the pool (which we sadly don't get to see), and Pearl sprays some luminol around, getting a reaction from the skull rock and, strangely enough, Orla herself. They notice that the orca is behaving oddly and it looks like she's sinking into the water, so they call for Dr. Crab to figure out what to do. The game displays fine knowledge of how marine mammals sleep by saying that both hemispheres of Orla's brain are asleep and that's why she's sinking, because normally they only put one hemisphere of their brain to sleep at a time so they don't drown. Anyway, Crab pumps the orca's stomach, and we find a pill labeled 3Zs, and nobody can figure out for the life of them what effect this pill might have. Hmm...I wonder...! Sounds like a job for Apollo, who's excited that he finally gets to do something!

We finally get to talk to Sasha, who's actually surprised to see us. She said that Blackquill told her they had abandoned her, so she actually drops to the floor and starts crying tears of joy to know we're still on her side. It's a really nice moment, but it's too bad she doesn't get an animation for it. I actually like her "real" animations when she's not acting in character best. My favorite is Sasha's nervous animation where she pushes the blade of her sword in and out over and over.

Fuck, that whole post reminds me of how much 5-6's cast is just GOAT, even compared to some epic cases

I was actually really struck by how much I liked that thing with DePlume where she says she only autographs her books if you actually read it, because that's what's important. It's just cool because she seems like she's a really awful person at first but it turns out she's actually pretty okay.

The 3Z's thing did really bother me. Like duh, it's a sleeping drug. Duh.

Yeah I think 6-1 is gonna blow past 5-1 and stuff easy. There's so much plot exposition and stuff, the seance, even for a tutorial seance, is given plenty room to breathe, and Andi's gimmick means a lot of time getting eaten up too. But I still don't think it beats E2-1.

E2-1 doesn't really "act" like an intro case in my opinion, you still have some tutorially stuff because gotta get that out of the way just in case (although who is playing this game as their first in the series? what the hell?), but it's a case with four different witnesses. That's middle-of-the-game filler kind of stuff.

Anyway, back to 5-6! At this point, the game starts piling the suspicion onto Herman Crab hardcore. They lead you into thinking that Crab was Azura Summers's boyfriend due to the charms, although it seems preposterous at face value. Sasha also says she overheard Dr. Crab talking about euthanizing Orla, even though he says he found the practice abhorrent before. He's also got that sidelong glance with the sinister grin that doesn't help his case any (although it's a great animation). He happens to have a supply of the 3Zs pills on hand and recently ordered a bunch of them, according to Apollo's investigation. Crab also has a couple of Psyche-Locks, including a five lock one that you don't actually get to break because Fulbright busts in to ask him to be the prosecution's witness for the trial because Rimes is refusing to cooperate. The bizarre thing is that Phoenix freaks out when he sees the five locks and wonders, "How will I ever break these?" I know it's been a while, dude, but you've broken plenty of five lock ones before! Has there actually been a five lock one you actually break in either DD or SoJ? I don't think so.

Oh right, I forgot to mention I think this is the only case where you actually encounter Blackquill outside of court (or prison in 5-5). You meet him briefly during the investigation, but he doesn't really have much to say. Pearl also discovers the upside down handprint on the ladder that will ultimately save the day at the end! Good work, Pearl!

One of the things I love about 5-6 so much is how it plays with your expectations. It's probably the most meta case in the series. This is a case that knows this is not your first time around the Ace Attorney block and is pulling out all the stops to surprise you. I totally bit on Crab being the bad guy - it didn't fully make sense to me, but the game left some pretty clever breadcrumbs that seemed like they'd lead to that conclusion. There isn't a clear bad guy in the case yet, and AA almost never introduces a new character on day 2 unless they're the bad guy (Vasquez, Acro, etc). He's the most sinister-seeming of the cast, and 5-6 plays up this fact masterfully before revealing that he really is just a grouch with a professional ethic and a good heart.

Meanwhile, this is getting ahead of myself, but the way they set up Rimes was flawless. He's one of the first characters introduced, he just seems like a charming, funny witness. He has a silly gimmick that he's not afraid to use, which isn't normal for a non-obvious villain, and he also very clearly plays a role on day 1, has a testimony, and seems like he has a clear purpose already set. He isn't hiding his grudge against Orla, and he seems enough like an open book with maybe a couple of innocent secrets that it makes you feel like you already know his deal, and that he isn't going to have more of a deal. But then, OH MAN, he has a deal, and it's fucking GREAT. I didn't see it coming at all and it's one of the highlights of the series for me.

Yeah, 6-6 was like... I won't say that I just took it for granted that it would be as awesome as 5-6 or anything, but I saw how 5-6 felt like it went the extra mile to be interesting as a bonus case, and 6-6 wasn't just played straight, it was played so straight that I was surprised when it didn't swerve. But being surprised by that doesn't make it a swerve. It's just an anticlimax.

All right, I hit the save point in trial day 2, and a lot has happened already, so I figure I'd better talk about the first half now! Three testimonies so far: One by Crab (which surprised me, honestly. I thought he was on the stand longer than that) and two by Marlon, pre-transformation, the latter of which was a Mood Matrix with three contradictions total. Also, Marlon transforms earlier in the trial day than I remember. I thought it was after Orla's "testimony," but it happens once you finish his Mood Matrix!

Anyway, for only having a single testimony, Crab is a great witness. Lots of laughs to be had here. When Phoenix asks why they clean the pool at night, Crab says that the aquarium is open every day of the year, so the only time they can do it is when there are no customers. Blackquill goes, "No days off, huh? I can relate to that." Then Athena happily bursts out, "I'm glad things are DIFFERENT at OUR office!" and Phoenix tells her not to rub it in too much. When he suggests maybe Orla was in the pool while they were cleaning it, Crab says that's silly because it'd be like trying to clean the bathtub while you were taking a shower. Nobody does that. Blackquill interjects that he had shower cleaning duty yesterday, and it was so clean and slick that he's sure all the inmates are slipping and sliding everywhere as we speak. Something I forgot a couple days ago, but Blackquill tried to tell one of his prison anecdotes on day 1, and Phoenix successfully guesses what he's talking about before he can explain. I guess all those trials trying to decipher Godot's metaphors paid off!

At one point, Athena says something ridiculous, and Crab says that she's even more birdbrained than Rifle. Blackquill takes offense to that remark and says there will be no belittling of birds in his presence. There's another great moment when the Judge is talking about how adorable Sniper is, and Blackquill comments that he remembers the Judge's reaction to meeting Taka not being quite the same. The Judge stammers that Taka is a fine bird and urges Crab to continue his testimony quickly.

However, it starts getting serious when Phoenix tries to accuse Crab of killing Orla. He gets deeply offended by that and kicks the witness stand three times (a fantastic animation, by the way) and is furious that Phoenix is attempting to tarnish his profession like that. This leads to the question of who fed Orla the 3Zs pill, and it was either Sasha or Marlon because they both fed her some fish during the trial the day before. Of course, Phoenix refuses to believe it was Sasha, so they call Marlon to the stand, who is pretty quick to admit he did it. He doesn't hide his hatred of Orla anymore and says he decided to take revenge on the orca for killing the captain.

Naturally, Blackquill is displeased by this development, but Marlon is pulling an anti-Dahlia here. He's standing up for the defendant and is sincere about it, but he tries to pin the blame on Orla instead. He doesn't understand why Phoenix would question his testimony because it's in Sasha's best interests, and he can only save one or the other. Phoenix disagrees because he doesn't think letting Orla take the fall is what Sasha would want, and he thinks he can save them both.

Marlon has a Mood Matrix where we find out he was Azura's boyfriend and thus we have the first interracial relationship in the series. Wait, are Dahlia and Iris Asian if they're Feys? I guess they would be. Or at least part-Asian. Anyway, that's irrelevant. Marlon transforms and we find out the real scene of the crime was the show stage, where he admits he hid the body in the skull rock and had Sasha move it over there so DePlume would see it. However, when the question of how Marlon manipulated Orla comes up, Phoenix is at a loss...until he decides to call the orca to the stand, of course! What else would he do? They decide to take a recess to set up the video conference, and we hit the save point.

5-6 complete! Two more testimonies here: One with Orla and the infamous "The Dissin' of Phoenix Wright" testimony from Mega Rimes. Of course, the Orla testimony couldn't hope to match Polly's (the parrot, not Apollo), but it's still pretty fun, mostly because Blackquill gets more and more incensed with every statement you press. However, he's quite impressed when Phoenix actually manages to use the cross-examination to tie Rimes to the incident by using the training videos on his cell phone. He also reluctantly admits that Orla's song isn't bad, although Taka's is naturally clearer and more beautiful. Phoenix thinks neither one should quit their day job.

Oh right, sequence breaking here, but during the recess, both Crab and DePlume show up to tell us that they'll accept the truth, no matter what it is. DePlume vows to record it in her next book, even if it contradicts the first book. Crab isn't pleased that Phoenix is exposing all of the aquarium's dirty secrets, but he's sure they'll find a way to handle it in the end. Phoenix also speculates that Azura actually died from the heart condition that Sasha coincidentally also has and not from being killed by the orca. Nobody bothered to do a detailed investigation into the cause of death, I guess!

Back to the trial, now we've got to find out how Rimes managed to manipulate the orca, particularly about how he managed to get Orla to do two tricks at once, including a completely different song. The cell phone videos to the rescue once more! There's a video of Azura getting the orca to sing the old song, so Phoenix suggests Rimes used his walkie-talkie to broadcast the song over the speaker to make it seem like Orla was singing at the same time.

Rimes ain't about to play that game though, yo ho ho, and he'll tell you why! As an aside, I love the Judge's reaction when he transforms. "Where did this pirate come from?!" Rimes drops a hardcore beat on Phoenix explaining that his walkie-talkie is busted. Unfortunately, I inwardly shuddered when he said "cray-cray" at the end, so I have to dock him a lot of points and can't consider him a top ten character. But no worries! There's already a top ten AA character who originated in DD in 5-6 anyway!

Anyway, now the job is to prove that the walkie-talkie is actually Jack Shipley's, whose walkie-talkie has gone missing and would naturally get busted up pretty badly from a 65-foot drop. The key is the tooth marks on the walkie-talkie, which match the ones in the picture of Azura in DePlume's book. Rimes insists he's tried to take on Orla in a fight and she bit him and the walkie-talkie, which is absurd but he has holes all over his body to "prove" it (although they actually are the result of shark bites or something). However, Phoenix and Athena notice something strange about the tooth mark patterns, and now it's Revisualization time! Based on the two songs and the two different tooth mark patterns, Phoenix can only conclude...there are two different orcas here! The fact that Rimes has Shipley's walkie-talkie puts him at the scene at the time of death, and now we have the really cool breakdown of him looking like he's on a ship in a really bad storm, and then he sinks down into the witness stand and looks like a prisoner behind bars. "Once again...I'm too weak...to help anyone."

It seems like the case is solved...but something still doesn't feel right. Rimes says to lock him away and give him the death penalty, and Blackquill says they determined the large bruise around Shipley's wrist was from a powerful grip from Rimes's hand. Blackquill surmises that it must have been a result of a scuffle between the two, but Phoenix still can't shake the feeling that something's not right. He remembers those fingerprints Pearl found, and that's our final piece of evidence. With this, he's able to prove that Rimes was actually trying to save Shipley, not kill him. Turns out there was no murder, after all! It was an unfortunate accident. This might be Phoenix's best moment in DD here, where he's just trusting his gut as a lawyer and running with it, refusing to take the easy way out and determining to make sure the whole truth gets out. He's just the best.

All's well that ends well, I suppose! Marlon doesn't go to jail, and we also find out that the original orca is still alive and well! We fast forward a few months, and Phoenix goes back to see the Swashbuckler Spectacular, this time featuring both orcas and Marlon as the villainous Redstache! 5-6 might be the series' happiest ending. It still has a dark spot with Shipley being dead, of course, but compared to what it was looking like, with Rimes being put away and the original orca being dead, it's quite a rebound!

honestly Layton/Ace Attorney is probably the longest game in the series due to the Layton sequences if you try to do everything there is to do and you're bad at puzzles like I am

darn puzzles

also I called DD > SoJ and AAI2 to be the longest game before we began so I'm still rooting to be right

You think 6-2 is longer than 6-6, huh.

I guess it's possible because 6-6 is a pretty breezy case, especially for the current team's standards. I don't feel like 6-2 was that close to 5-5 in terms of length, and they're the same type of case in terms of format.
