Most people hating on the WiiU do so because its library failed to pan out, not anything to do with the fundamental design of it. Even in the fundamental design, there really aren't enough similarities to call them "the same thing." This is just a silly question all around.

The Switch "gimmick" actually works. Being able to play my games on the go in a pinch, bring my system at work to play during lunch, or being able to do multiplayer games without split screen and without needing 2 TVs is just fantastic.

And yeah, Zelda happened.

Not really. There were some that whined about it not being powerful enough, but peasants that compare the power of consoles as though that matters don't count as people.

This. The Wii U gimmick was kind of lame. I don't care about a second screen, the DS and 3DS already do that.

I did, because I thought it was a badly designed console from the start.

It had the portability of a console and the power of a portable. As far as I was concerned it was the worst of both worlds and the streaming feature was a money dump. The Wii U should have been a Switch or a PS4 in my opinion.

The only people who thought this were people who paid absolutely no attention to gaming media and based their understanding entirely on the name and the basic superficial appearance. Unfortunately, such people make up a sizable percentage of the market, and Nintendo's failure to catch their interest was one of the major reasons for the WiiU's failure. As somebody on a gaming website, however, you don't really have any excuse for thinking that.

I have one actually. That really was an answer that I got from a coworker. We were sitting during our break, and she was saying how her kids were asking for a new wii when they already got one years ago. After a few minutes, it was obvious they were talking about the wii-u. It's definitely a different console, but Nintendo didn't really do a good job explaining to the non gaming crowd how different it was from the wii apart from the gamepad. It didn't help (in this case) that it still played wii games, and used the same accessories. Those same people may not realize the difference in the ds and 3ds besides the "3d" part.

Yep, the 3DS ran into the same problem at first, with people assuming it was just a DS with a 3D feature, and not a new handheld. That's one of the reasons the price got slashed so quickly, and they did the whole Ambassador thing. Nintendo did eventually start emphasizing "it's a new console" in their ads, but only after they'd squandered their one-year head start and the PS4 and Xbone had come out with no such handicap.

This is more or less what I came in to say.

People disliked the Wii-U because it was a console, and people compared it to other consoles.

People like the Switch because, regardless of what Nintendo claims it is, it's pretty clearly a handheld and not a console, so people hold it to a much lower standard.

That being said, as positive as the response to the Switch has been online, it won't necessarily do all that well outside of Japan beyond the initial early adopter rush unless they can aggressively expand the library and convince people who otherwise aren't all that interested in handheld gaming or Nintendo in general to buy in. It can still easily flop just like the Wii-U ultimately did just as easily as it can potentially see Wii-like levels of success.

Couldn't tell you. I'm actually very surprised at the positive reception the Switch has, because aside from the fact that it has no games, in a lot of ways it just feels like a alternate version of the Wii U. I have a good amount of hope for the future of the Switch, but right now, it's really bad.

Uhhh...ive been using it in handheld mode mostly and it is clearly not a handheld because the battery life is absolute shite. It's only like 3 hours. I basically have the charger right next to my couch or bed and have to charge waaaay more frequently than my 3ds xl

I can't even imagine taking the thing anywhere other than home or on a trip to another home

I like the Wii U but sometimes I miss the gimmick-less Nintendo days like the SNES or Gamecube. Those are just the system, wires, controllers, and games. The Wii U has the Gamepad (with a less than ideal battery life), Wiimotes (which also need to be charged/have batteries replaced), Wiimote accessories (Nunchuk, Classic Controller, etc.), Pro Controller, sensor bar, GC adapter that works for only game, etc. It's a pain when different games have different controller requirements, or if you wanna take the console anywhere.

i feel like nintendo marketed the switch as a console because of the $300 cost. Now we compare it to PS4 and Xbox One, which we look at it and say it a shitty console. Really it's a $300 handheld tablet. We should compare it to the vita and 3ds. Oh my god it's a huge jump.

Wii U failed because of haters that never owned the system and heard other people (who haven't played it) hating it for no good reason. it's basically a ps3 console that is a 3ds features.

Switch is basically a superior vita, with the psp feature that lets you hook it up to your tv.

Its off to a great start, new name, new concept with Zelda to boot

Its up to Nintendo to maintain the head start by getting titles out, developers aboard and using the consoles potential in innovative ways

With the Wii U I believe the consoles title lead the many existing Wii owners into thinking it was more of an upgrade than a new console. Nintendo took a chance by trying to shift the Wii's success over and it didn't work.

The Wii U is a great console, the gamepad is a great feature and its unfortunate it didn't make it into more homes

Most of that is really just the off-TV play thing, only the Switch's attempt at that actually works because you aren't required to stay within 20 feet and a clear line of sight of the TV to take advantage of it.

Are you suggesting that the SNES and GC didn't have alternative controllers?

The dock doesn't really do that much. it's like the wire for the psp. you don't consider the psp a console.
