There is already a power vacuum in Syria... It has existed for years and years, and it has given us ISIS, the migrant/refugee crisis, and untold human suffering. The cost of turning a blind eye and doing nothing is greater than the cost of intervention. America should always be first in defense of the innocent and first to oppose genocide. I loved Obama, but his inaction on Syria was his greatest failure as president.

I disagree with this. I think Obama did right not to intervene in Syria, because I doubt the US could really influence the war on the ground, and we'd likely just make it worse. The "red line" was a mistake, but getting the chemical weapons out of there, and allowing Assad to stay in place was an acceptable bargain to me.

Now Assad has gone back on that agreement, seriously broken international law and slapped us in the face for agreeing not to intervene against him before. We can't let that go unanswered.

Because of spurious wars and conflicts that we started.

The cost of turning a blind eye and doing nothing is greater than the cost of intervention.

The cost of intervention is ISIS growing stronger. The cost of not intervening is Assad being evil to his citizenry. The former is more harmful to Syria, to surrounding countries, and to Europe since their governments seem to just keep accepting refugees.

America should always be first in defense of the innocent and first to oppose genocide.

Not our region, not our problem. There are numerous regions in the world undergoing massive abuse from governments that we don't intervene in. Syria doesn't deserve special attention.

I loved Obama, but his inaction on Syria was his greatest failure as president.

The fact he didn't pull a Bush 2.0 and throw us into a war is actually one of the better aspects of his Presidency.

Because it's a human tragedy, a slaughter to the tune of half a million killed and millions more displaced... Because doing nothing has given rise to ISIS, and international terrorism... Because doing nothing has given us the migrant crisis, which has created a right wing backlash across the world and threatened to bring down the European Union... Because if we don't nothing, the children of ravaged Syria who grow up without safety, without education will turn into radicals, and some of those radicals will turn to terrorism... and because intervening to save the innocent people of Syria is the right thing to do.

Okay

That's because there's a new development: Assad broke the agreement we had to turn over ALL of his chemical weapons in exchange for us leaving him alone.

Okay

It is worrisome. There is no plan... It seems to be, at the heart of it, an emotional response by Trump. He saw the news reports, and it affected him, and he wanted to avenge them... so he did. Even though the response is correct and justified, it doesn't portend well that there's no cohesive strategy underlying this.
