One of my favorite Star Wars films. Enjoyed it enough to go back to the theater the following week and watch it a second time. Slots perfectly into the saga, IMO.

Then again, I enjoyed Godzilla (2014) by the same director, and ... quite a number of people dislike that movie, too.

sounds like you're one of the lucky few who can ignore the flaws of a bad movie and enjoy it regardless

I thought Krennic was fantastic whenever he appeared, and Bohdi, Chirrut and Baze were all really good as supporting characters with the correct amount of screentime/backstory for their purpose. K2 as well.

Mexican Han Solo and Strong Female Star Wars Lead #2 were useless and their deaths came as a relief.

The opening is awesome because it's got so much Krennic, the first act is boring-ass rubbish, the second is at least nice to look at and has more Krennic, and the third has some really cool battle scenes/shots which cut away way too fast. There were several AT-AT/X-Wing shots they could have got WAY more mileage out of - as it was it felt like the AT-ATs were in it for all of four minutes. Every time it cuts back to Jyn and Cassian it takes an absolute dive.

Obviously the Vader epilogue is awesome but is literally a single minute long.

The hologram/destruction of Jedha scene has got a lot of praise on Reddit for MUH EMOSHUNS, but for whatever it's worth I thought this was one of Mads' worst (English) performances ever.

Overall, a solid action movie I guess, with fanservice metered out very effectively (assuming you didn't find Tarkin off-putting). I give the movie credit for engrossing me enough on first viewing that I wasn't just sitting there waiting for Vader to show up during the first half.

it's a testament to how forgettable the characters were that none of those names bring a face to mind aside from k2

The latter three I can understand. If you can't remember which one Krennic was then you were paying less than no attention.

lol, fuck your snide bullshit. i paid full attention to the movie, but none of the characters made any sort of impression except k2. i'm sure if i'd have read this post in the week or even the month after i saw it, i'd know exactly who you're talking about, but four months distant, i don't remember who krennic is, nor do i care to. i remember all the characters themselves - the chick, her vaguely french-looking co-lead, the white-clad tarkin-lite imperial guy, the blind jedi wannabe, his large buddy, etc., but the movie didn't invest me in a single one of them to the point that i cared to remember any of their names after i walked out of the theater.

The first case. It is so bad that it reaches another bizarre level of enjoyment. I have a whole shelf of movies that fit this category.

That is how a lot of people are nowadays.

They watch a movie on a tablet while doing other things and then complain that the movie wasn't engaging or interesting.

but the prequels were genuinely the 3 s***tiest movies I've ever watched.

That's all well and good, but I'm asking if this specific element contributed to that hatred.

lol this is completely ridiculous. this just in everyone, every standalone movie that ever had character development was doing it wrong, because they were telling stories about handfuls of people nobody knew and meaningful character arcs got in the way of the movie being about a bunch of nobodies hahahahahaha

What do standalone movies have to do with Rogue One? What a silly post.

lol, fuck your snide bullshit too. i saw the shit in theaters and had my eyes on the screen the whole time

just because you are deeply impressed by mediocre flicks doesn't mean mediocre flicks are good, but if you have to keep making things up to stave off the pain of seeing people give a forgettable movie the criticism it deserves, you do you lol

I watched the movie twice in theaters and I still had no idea what the names of any of the characters were. The only ones I knew were from the OG trilogy.

Shit, I can tell you what the name is of the old leader bitch from the original trilogy - Mon Mothma, but I couldn't even tell you the name of the mexican guy. I think it was Calrissian or something? Callous? I don't know.

The girl was...I think Jane?

Episode 3 wasn't really THAT bad in my opinion. It wasn't as good as the original 3 (any of them), for me, but I watched it twice all the way through and enjoyed it both times.

Episode 1 and 2 where more of a 1 time shot for me, but I watched em in the theater and didn't leave midway through, I would have for Rogue one for sure.

I found 1 to be watchable. Not a movie I'd ever willingly put on myself, but if someone else wanted to watch it I'd sit around and be mildly entertained for the run-time. It's the only one of the prequels that actually kind of "felt" like a Star Wars movie, albeit in a heavily watered down fashion.

Episode 2 was, without a word of exaggeration, the single worst movie I've ever watched all the way through. Granted, I'm not a movie buff by any stretch of the imagination, but fuck me that movie was putrescent. Episode 3 wasn't much better - it escaped the depths of feculence that Episode II plumbed, but only just, and even then it was mostly because if you shut your brain off and ignored all the scenes where people were talking, some of the action scenes were vaguely entertaining.

Well one is from a film that has had a major impact on pop culture for decades, and one is a new character from a film released just a few months ago

So duh

Yeah, I JUST watched it the other day and don't know any character names except K (didn't even know it was K2).

If they said the girls name, I never caught it although I would probably recognize her fathers name since that said that many times.

I took a break 3 times to get through the movie, so yeah, that is just 1 step above a movie I give up on after 15 minutes pretty much. It's not as low as you can go, but it's pretty close. I mean, I made it through Zoolander 2 for instance, I think in one sitting even. I hated it, but I made it through (we may have taken a break halfway through, but just one).

Now, I'm not saying this movie was as bad as zoolander 2, which retroactively made me like the first Zoolander less because it was so bad, but it was about as forgettable of a movie as I have ever seen. I was pretty bored all the way through.

I'm glad some people enjoyed it though. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean everyone else has to hate it/dislike it as well. I don't generally like FPS games (other then ones like Borederlands), but they are very popular and I don't try and argue that nobody should like them.

I don't tend to like Drama's (movies), and I like humor in my shows to some degree, and I think Rogue One just didn't have what I like in a movie. Doesn't make it horrible, but it does make it not for me.
