Just a little topic series I was thinking of running to see just how long I'm willing to put up with it. The premise is simple: every day, ten Pokemon will be up for voting, you vote for your favorite. The top FIVE advance to the next day, where they'll face five new Pokemon. And then we see what can last the longest. Like I said, I'll probably get bored at some point, but until then, let's see if we can get through Gen II at least, shall we?

Also, when we reach the final days of the countdown, the contest will become a single-elimination series, with each round trimming the field one-by-one until we crown a single winner from Gen II. Jolteon is our Gen I champion and will face off against six other champions in the grand finals.

Also, feel free to discuss opinions and predictions and whatnot.

Scizor got blown the FUCK out (which makes me more annoyed that he outlasted Espeon, you bastards.) That's all there is to say. It's time for Feraligatr to see if he can finish off the Gen I slaughter, or if Umbreon can avenge her sister and replicate the PotY tournament.

Why does Inviso refer to all the Eeveeltions as "she's" when they are all of the 87.5% Male variety, and most of them look more masculine anyway? Like I can understand Espeon and Sylveon, but Umbreon and Jolteon definitely look masculine.

The only Eeveelution that looks masculine is Flareon. Everything else is gender ambiguous at best.

I think of Vaporeon, Glaceon, Leafeon, and Sylveon as girls, and the others as boys. Pretty even split.

There is absolutely no way I would say that Glaceon and Sylveon are gender ambiguous. They are definitely feminine.

I meant with specific regards to masculinity. You have Espeon/Glaceon/Sylveon as definite feminine, then Jolteon/Vaporeon/Umbreon/Leafeon as ambiguous, and Flareon is decisively masculine.

I don't think Flareon is particularly more masculine than Jolteon/Umbreon. It's basically Eevee+ (which I would also consider ambiguous, even though I usually think of it as a boy).

The big poofiness of Flareon still strikes me more as a feminine feature, like a woman wearing a big scarf or a fur coat and hat. I don't get that vibe from Eevee, though (nor Cinccino for some reason). But it's not a consistent thing. Sometimes the artwork or sprites do look more distinctly boyish.

If you do a randomized list, can't you just randomize it once at the beginning, and then just stick it in a notepad file or something? Marking where you leave off each day so you can easily see what the next five to add are?

nice! i have fond memories of feraligatr, am glad it won. it was my starter in silver, which was subjectively the peak of the series for me

There really is no perfect way to do it. Every format has its flaws.

Pokedex order is the most objective way to do this, but that was bad in Gen I because there were two sections of the list (Bulbasaur thru Nidoking, then Lapras thru Mew) that were densely populated with popular Pokemon, then a bunch of goobers in the middle with the occasional popular kid. It created a really anticlimactic finish because the early group eventually fell victim to winner fatigue, and then the ending group barged its way in and just stomped out what was left. Though it was heavily noticeable in Gen I due to the other popular Pokemon being near the beginning and end as well, this will be problematic in any generation because it will inherently favor the legendaries and be an uphill battle for the starters.

Board 8 order creates the most desirable result because it guarantees that the actual most popular Pokemon will be present during the final rounds, but then it's like, what was the rest of the damn thing for? To see who the most popular of 70 losers is? Yeah there were SOME fun things but this format is guaranteed to create a lot of one-and-done match winners.

Ideally the best solution would be to randomize the list (be it once at the beginning or daily), that way we only have a calculator to blame if we get an undesirable result. But the problem here is falls into the host integrity category. Who's to say that the host (be it Inviso or anyone else) won't just reroll if they don't like the list the RNG spits out? Do we do a live draw? What if the whole purpose of randomization is so that we DON'T know what's coming? Do we live draw every single day? It's just a whole headache.

At the end of the day my vote goes to Board 8 order. I think that's the one where the strengths most outweigh the weaknesses, plus at least now we can just be consistent from here on out and just put an asterisk next to Gen I, rather than have the asterisk next to Gen II or have asterisks next to both Gen I AND Gen II.
