Then you clearly didn't look into it enough. Low pay? Absolutely. But your lack of bills when you're in almost makes up for it. Don't use their loan repayment program, use the GI Bill when you get out, and you only need a three year contract to get that.

The GI Bill pays for school up to the highest public school rate for the state. I dropped out of Oklahoma State, did five years for a contract, and then used my education benefits for school. I got paid for housing,for books, and since my benefits weren't considered income all my Pell grants went to my pocket which I used to pay off my truck. The smartest thing I ever did was join the army, and the second smartest was to get the fuck out.

And while you're at it, fall head first off a Humvee a few times and get it on your medical record so you can milk them for disability. I didn't do it but it worked out for a bunch of my buddies.

Will the GI bill pay for graduate school, though? If I spend a few years after college doing army instead of a job in my field my grad school pickings will be slim anyway.

As far as I've been informed, and with people I've been in with, the bill pays for accredited schools. I know guys that have used it for flight school, I know guys that have used it for golf school, I know guys that have used it for trade school. as long as the grad school is accredited, you should be good. Do some independent research, don't trust the recruiters.

Additionally, the reason I say to not take the loan repayment is because you get BAH for school based off the zip code. You could have 400 a month in loan payments but live somewhere that gives you 1200 a month in payments for housing. Over the course of 36 months it makes a difference.

Man I dunno this seems like a not awful opportunity tbh

If I can handle 36 consecutive months in the army, I get a butt load of money for grad school. I might not get into the best school ever but I can probably attend a pretty decent one. And I was planning on taking a 2-3 year break after graduation anyway <_> >_< I was mostly kidding when I made this topic but....

I don't really know if I could deal with the military life though. Like, is that 36 consecutive months of traveling around and stuff? I'd rather stay home than do that.

The contract is 36 months minus whatever time you do for training. Typically the shortest contract they sign is 3 years which is fine since that's the minimum for education benefits anyway. So basically you're only active duty for the difference in time between training and your exit time. For instance if you're in training for 6 months, you'd be active for 30. Stateside assignments are for 2 years, but with 6 months left they wouldn't bother reassigning you, so if you signed a 3 year contract you'd effectively stay at your first assignment for the duration of your contract.

The military life isn't particularly that difficult after basic training. It's a pain in the ass for sure, but I wouldn't really consider it complicated, especially if you're single. And with the wars almost effectively over, the odds of you deploying are very slim. Which actually kind of sucks because it's great money with a minimum chance of being killed.

Depends on the recruiters options. I know at one point they let you, but that was a decade ago. I got my job of choice and a good amount of education benefits on top of a cash bonus. The only way to know for sure would be to ask a recruiter.

This is all like two years away though :P

It's a real nice hypothetical. Graduate from college, join the military. Get stationed for three years at somewhere I want to be. Maybe take a year off after that to get everything in order, apply to schools, etc. get accepted into kick-butt grad school. Graduate from that. Get awesome job. Live awesome life.

So hype.

Fuck that. If you're still planning on graduating then just find a recruiter on campus and see what their options are for commissioning and just do a four year commitment and be done with it. You'll make more than enough to pay your loans and you'd have enough education benefits to probably pay for two masters programs.

If you're gonna get a degree then fuck enlisting.

Don't get me wrong, enlisting is still a viable option, but if you're gonna get a degree then look into the commission options first.

This feels like a joke/troll thread. On the off chance it is not, I have some advice.

First of all, take a break from College, but think long and hard before you join the military; it's a serious commitment, though an honorable one. Given your personality so far I am not sure if it would be a good fit for you, or maybe it would be a really good fit for you in the sense it would do you good and give you skills you may be currently lacking.

Either way, if you are feeling burned out from college and this is, say, your first year, take a break, give it some time and decide what you want to do with your life. A college degree is not required to be successful in life, but it will help you dramatically to find a good, well paying job.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck.

This definitely started out as not a serious topic at all. But actually looking at some military pages makes it seem not all that awful. I still have some personal issues, but that's another story. I love school and what I'm studying and I'm only a year out from graduating and there's no way I'd give it up. Ever. I'm desperate to start the next phase of schooling, even! No offense but you don't really know anything about my personality.

I completely agree. Please, think, very carefully about this. The military is not something to be entered into lightly.

(Plus, if you join, sooner or later you'll probably be shipped off to Syria, due to the whims of the president....) ;.;

Either way, if you are feeling burned out from college and this is, say, your first year, take a break, give it some time and decide what you want to do with your life.

An excellent idea.

A college degree is not required to be successful in life, but it will help you dramatically to find a good, well paying job.

Everybody does always say this ... but, I just wanted to mention that my own personal experience has been exactly the opposite.
A number of acquaintances who didn't finish, and most of whom didn't start, college, are faring far better than I am in this regard;
they did the smart thing and went directly into specific job-training programs instead;
whereas I (solely at my parents' urging) got a college degree from a mildly prestigious university, at considerable expense, and it has since proven to be of absolutely zero use to me in my life. ;.;

Well, I do get plenty of junk mail from the university, even this many years later, begging for even more money from me.... >.<;;
