$863, per person, per month, would pay for everyone's healthcare, apparently.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/new-peak-us-health-care-spending-10345-per-person/

That number would probably be far less if all the various middlemen were removed, assuming all the government middlemen didn't end up even more inefficient and redundant all over again.

Roads are used by everyone, the military protects everyone, which is why those are paid for with taxes. Water doesn't come out of taxes, you pay for that separate.

Roads are NOT used by everyone.
The military DOES NOT protect everyone.
Water DOES come out of taxes. The water bill only refers to private home use that you use from the line. All of the infrastructure, all of the water filling the pipes, all of the water being protected in the reservoir, all of that shit leading up to the home is bought and paid for by your taxes - regardless of whether you use it or not.

Yeah, we get it.
Much like roads, water lines are funded at least partly by "everyone", yet there's still no inherent right to have use of it for free.

I know you're not talking to me but absolutely.
Honestly, I'd prefer a govt. option for health insurance. Let it out compete the rest of the industry until everyone is on it then bam, single payer. I don't care if the rich have access to a private market where they can pay for better and quicker health care, but absolutely the govt. should at least act as an insurance provider.

Even if you don't drive or walk on roads, you benefit from the economics of living in a country that has them. They have enabled trade and commerce to raise the quality of life across the board.

Likewise, even if you're generally healthy, you benefit from living in a society that helps the sick.
It is supremely stupid to not acknowledge this.

You can't, at all, so there's no useful purpose in worrying about it.

We're already at the bottom of Reagan's Axiom here, and getting the government out is completely infeasible.
Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

A better, faster, more equitable, and much more effective solution to cutting healthcare costs is to remove third-party payers entirely, except for maybe catastrophic insurance and charity hospitals.
When everyone has to pay directly, in cash, for healthcare, the costs will collapse drastically and immediately.

like that slavery argument Rand Paul or someone used- saying that if healthcare is a right then you're forcing doctors to work and hence it's slavery. ok so police, firefighters and garbagemen are slaves then too right?

every single argument against it is complete and utter garbage. and there is not a single real argument against single-payer, but here we are, slaves to the lobbyists and donors

Even ignoring that, if nothing else, herd immunity. Sure, you're not going to catch a broken arm (unless I get it my way) but you could see how for example, govt. provided vaccines would help ensure you don't get the flu because there will be less sick people running around. Right?

We really really don't.

Nobody in the first world should have to choose between being unhealthy or being broke.

Nobody should be buying medicene from the black market in the US because the healthcare system is so bad.

Rape victims should have to pay more and possibly lose coverage because them being raped is a pre-existed condition.

We don't provide nearly enough. And we spend more money to provide less. It's absurd
