Yeah. P5's biggest problem is that outside of a few standout party members (well mostly just Futaba honestly), it nailed it's side characters far more than its core characters. The party interactions are really weak as well. Joker is a goddamn awesome main character though. The story also isn't executed as well as it should have been, even though the premise is strong and starts strong.

P5's character are probably better than 3's, but I think 3's are more memorable to me right now. It's probably due to seniority and being in multiple games.

So far I'd say

Ryuji > Junpei
Ann > Yukari
Akihiko > Yusuke , but Yusuke IS very good
Makoto > Mitsuru, but Mitsuru IS very good
Futaba > Fuuka
Morgana may be better than Koromaru, but I feel weird comparing them

Of course there other things like Shinjiro standing at the top on his own, and Elizabeth being better than the twins

Shinji is special sure (Though I take Futaba, Rise and Kanji all over him. Maybe Makoto too on a good day), but Twins > Elizabeth.

I'm not including P4 in this discussion. That cast beasts over both P3 and P5.

I'm not quite done with the game, but so far rankings would be something like:

Futaba
Makoto
Mitsuru
Morgana
Akihiko
Junpei
Shinji
Yusuke
Ryuji
Ann
Fuuka
Koromaru
Yukari
Ken

Futaba is the only that had a character arc on the level of P4, I think.

Persona 3 just resonates with me in a way few games do. Characters, tone, theme, and atmosphere. It's an innate boost to it for me personally.

But I mean, it's not like these games are too far apart from me.

Persona 3 has been a permanent fixture in my Top 10 since I first played it. Persona 4 Golden (because Golden is legitimately a notable boost, not that Vanilla isn't excellent too) is probably just outside the Top 10, which leaves Persona 5 somewhere in the middle. There's really not that much separation between them, they're all excellent games.

Counterpoint: running errands while during battle. Hear it all you want, without it counting towards the Reaper showing up. At least I never had the Reaper appear when I left the victory screen on.

It's just it's not even the fact that Morgana never talked about his problem, and then left and got mad about it without telling anyone. It's him acting like/telling Haru that I didn't support or care about him that tips it over the edge, when I tried talking to him as much as I possibly could. Everything that is happening right now is singularly his fault, and I bet not only will there be zero comeuppance for Morgana but also my best friend Ryuji will somehow be blamed for it and there will be no way for me to support him.
