According to The Root, the point of the event is to “acknowledge the struggles and resilience that black students have had to possess in order to thrive in higher education, an environment where minorities are typically underrepresented.”

Agree +100

Huggins said the event is “not about segregation,” but rather, "it’s about fellowship and building a community.” He said, “This is a chance to reaffirm for each other that we enter the work world with a network of supporters standing with us. We are all partners.”

HBC are the real way to go to network with black professionals so Idk why they didn't partner up :(

You mean except for the fact that after real civil rights crusaders spent so many decades trying to get blacks onto the same playing field as whites just so they could stand on that graduation stage next to them as equals and now regressives have said, "Nuh uh, we want segregation!" This highlights the painful backwards nature of the entire SJW movement. SJWs today have more in common with the KKK than they do with civil rights crusaders like MLK Jr.

I understand the idea behind it, but at the same time you are still segregating them. Not only are you segregating them, but by lifting the minority graduation as some special event that is better than regular graduation you are feeding into the alt right's narrative that whites are being downcast because they are white. This just doesn't seem to be a good way to celebrate the success.

I agree with the fact that it does feed alt right narrative (to an extent) however it is definitely not their intention. It is definitely a good way to celebrate success though, hell I'd love to meet a bunch of black college grads in one place and share their success because it is more difficult for us

Why is it more difficult for black people? We all go to the same schools, are governed by the same laws.

I would have loved a chance to go to a real college (besides some community college I was able to attend thanks to applying for FAFSA).

Also died laughing at HARVARD students claiming to be underprivileged, thats an ivy league school and is super prestigious and expensive.

I cant think of a more appropriate situation where this more suited:
>Harvard Student
>Underprivileged
(pick one)

So they are promoting fellowship and community building and affirming that we are all partners by holding an event based on skin color?

Not sure I understand the logic. I know a lot of people that I like and they are various ethnicities. Why would I want to meet up with a bunch of white people only? Like any other group half of them would end up being assholes.

I don't see any harm in them doing this, but it does seem silly.

That seems like a good point. I think it comes down to white people assuming lots of things. Like when WB was going to ban Speedy Gonzales for being offensive, but then a bunch of Mexicans complained because they didn't have a lot of characters.

they are still having their normal commencement ceremonies with their respective departments, you know. This is a separately organized graduate student event. The total number of grad students who participate in graduation in a given year is small; the number of graduating black grad students is even smaller. You can think of it like a reception celebrating a cultural identity that comes with a similar set of challenges (for which all people are invited to attend).

That honestly might make it worse. So instead of an altrusitic, though misguided, attempt on the schools part to celebrate black students overcoming adversity, the students themselves decided they needed their own special ceremony to say they worked harder than their peers?

I don't think it is bizarre or unacceptable for black students to have one. I just think how they are promoting this specific event is in bad taste.

I think that both are similar in that they shape someone's personal identity and are significant factors for how people develop relationships with others. Answer the question? I really don't understand how anyone could say that it's okay for LGBT groups but not for black students. Besides racism.

Guys, we're never going to unify by dividing each other up by our differences. In 50 years whites will be a minority. This identity politics can't last. And many prominent black people do not approve of this type of thing anyway. They've made good arguments against it over the years.

It's focused primarily on blacks outside of any other minority and it's only making them out to be a perpetual victim class. It's not healthy for the future.

everyone should have their own graduation.

its brilliant. think of how hard it would impact tuition prices. people might start actually realizing that college is a fucking scam and just seek higher education elsewhere.
