So back when Weekly World News was published as an independent thing you could buy, they had an article about pizza restaurants slipping laxatives, metal bolts, etc. into pizzas for lower tipping houses.
I read that back when I was like 10 or 11, but that's kinda stuck with me... I figure it does make sense that a company would keep some sort of notes about an address (at the very least they have to have a list of addresses that can't receive delivery due to unruly behavior/failure to pay, right?), so I always tip like $10. ... As a part time delivery driver, all tips are appreciated in my case. I will say that there is a database at the two different restaurants I've worked, with notes, so we know who the stiffs are. Personally, that doesn't change my service whatsoever because I'm just happy being out of the store, but of course there's some people who need this to make ends meet so ymmv.

The whole point of tipping delivery is because delivery drivers have to pay out of pocket for gas. Tipping pickup makes no sense & nobody does that. When you come to the take out window at the restaurant I work at, I am putting my myriad of other work on hold to wait on you. I have to take phone calls, put orders together (of which there can be dozens within the next half hour), make pizzas, stombolis, sandwiches, and a dozen other things. If you come to my window and are rude and don't tip, next time you are going to wait while I get other stuff out of the way. If you are nice and polite and tip, I will gladly wait on you before I get my 6 pizzas in the oven. I don't want as much as you would tip your server if you sat down, but $1 per order adds up and is very much appreciated. --- From the depths, the thing they called Worm King did rise. You're right, makes no sense when you are unaware of the game. Why is tipping to ensure future quality and care nonsensical? "Unaware of the game?" What, do I get a handjob with my pizza now? You don't deserve extra money to literally walk 3 steps, grab my pizza, and ring up my order which is just a part of your job. You're paid at least minimum wage as a regular employee. A delivery driver uses their own car, they have to navigate to your home--it's an exceptional service. A waiter/waitress continually returns to your table to address any potential concerns. They're paid less than minimum wage because of industry standard, and tips are "expected" to cover the difference. Those are societal norms. Tipping the cashier at my local pizza joint is not "expected." Sure, if I want to be on their good side, maybe get an extra dipping sauce for free slipped in my box, a tip can do that as a regular. But the moment you deny me a basic standard of service because I don't tip for carry out? Fuck off, you're a shit establishment and I'll never return. If that was "standard" I'd literally have to tip the cashier who makes my Subway sandwich. And Chipotle burrito. And my bank teller. And my grocer. But why not tip the fucking bagger too? There's not even a tipping option for ordering carryout when you go to any given pizza chain website. Fact is your job isn't particularly exceptional and like that guy said, it's highly unethical to give benefits to tippers when your business discourages tipping carryout in the first place Well you assumed I work at a pizza chain. I work at a slightly upscale restaurant that has pizzas on the menu. My business does not discourage tipping carryout and, in fact, encourages it by having a tip jar at the window. Food =/= Emergency A lot of people in the ER don't have true emergencies either. I'm saying for non-emergent visits, it would be highly unethical to triage based off of if you tip. I don't expect every employee to drop whatever task they're doing the moment I walk in the door for a carry out. If you're finishing up a task or on the phone, I expect to wait. That's normal. If you ignore me for 10 minutes to finish an entire pizza before handing me my pizza that's just waiting by the register because I'm known to not tip carry out I'll never give you my business again. Period. It's highly unethical behavior and I don't respect it. I've gone to plenty establishments that have given me reasonable service without having to tip carry out.
