Seinfield is neither generic nor bland, although you could kinda make an argument for Friends. BBT is probably a stronger choice than either. Granted, the strongest option would probably be some forgettable sitcom from the 50s or 60s since most of the memorable ones relied heavily on wacky gimmicks like witchcraft, being trapped on a deserted island, finding a genie (or Jeannie, if you will), etc.

But the way they execute the "nothing" is anything but. Also the character of Kramer is the opposite of bland and generic.

Seinfeld was a standard setting sitcom. It only seems bland and generic because it's been literally copied 100 times.

Pretty much this. See also the trope "Lucy is Unfunny," where it is said that so many sitcoms copied off of "I Love Lucy" before the days of "Cheers" or "Seinfeld." Then Jerry Seinfeld made his show to get away from that way of doing everything, and then everyone had to copy him once his show was successful.

Also, the most generic sitcom, bland even, well . . . since "Friends" and "Sabrina" both ended it could be anything in recent years that none of us have heard of or cared about on the major networks. The sitcoms we hear most about are generic and predictable, but instead of being bland they taste of feces and we wish they'd die (eg., "Big Bang Theory"). Those those we hear most about do not fit the bill, because they at least have enough impact that we wish they'd go away, like some sort of zombie outbreak. If you want generic and bland, then look at the line-ups recently and ask yourself what has gone for a season but you've heard nothing about. Compare notes with other people. When everyone's list lines up and you have at least one show that stands out by not standing out at all, then you have your answer.

They're stupid, yes, and like I said they have a flavor, albeit one of literal shit. Bland means there isn't even that. Think everyone's perception of how water tastes, and slap on it the label "comedic vodka." That's what you should be looking for. Mass produced, distilled water that promises so much more, and ends up being worthless.

Seinfeld was/is a masterpiece and extremely unique (before being cloned a ton at least), it was certainly not bland.

It's the only TV series I have watched every episode of at least twice (and many of them more then twice) and I don't even usually like sitcoms.

So many memorable moments/episodes/sayings phrases etc.

Freaking show was genius.

Too many people here are taking "generic, bland" to mean "something I don't like". Seinfeld, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, Rules of Engagement, etc. aren't "bland". But something like Friends, or Everybody Loves Raymond, or Full House, you could definitely make that argument.

Hard to say. Taste in sitcoms depends heavily on when you were born, I think. I love Seinfeld, but I can see why it'd be bland to somebody who didn't grow up with it. *thinks* I'd probably go with a choice like Everybody Loves Raymond, or really any show where it's a guy (who's not too bright), his wife (who's too hot for him), his kids (who don't matter), and probably his in-laws (who are actually funny, but overused). ... But I probably say that because I liked Married With Children.

Everybody Loves Raymond.

Here's the plotline to every episode:
- Things are okay in the Ramano household
- Ray says or does something that is clumsy or poorly expressed
- His emotionally manipulative shrew of a wife grossly overreacts to this event and borderline threatens divorce
- Ray seeks advice from his fucking loser of a brother, who doesn't help
- Ray's dipshit ultra controlling dumb fuck mother makes matters worse by taking a figurative runny shit all over the metaphorical fan
- The only decent character on the show, Ray's father, says something kind of funny
- Ray's kisses ass to his wife and begs for her forgiveness
- Turns out just a bunch ass kissing and a reminder that Ray's life belongs to her was all she needed to come to her sense
- Repeat

In general, the show could be best described as lazy and formulaic. It was occasionally funny, but mostly it was dull.

It is frustrating. Seems like "generic" is being misused almost as bad as "overrated" gets misused the exact same way.

Off the top of my head, According to Jim was just about the epitome of a generic, bland sitcom. If there's a better example out there, I forgot it existed. I'm sorry.
