Board 8 > Strife Plays Final Fantasy I (Origins Edition) [Be My Party] *Spoilers*

The poll has spoken. I'm going through the Squaresoft FF backlog. I may not do them all (depends on school after all). The d10 rolled 1, which means I am starting from scratch. I bought the origins edition of I&II for PS3. It was free to download for the Vita. That will save my legs from getting stiff sitting all the time.

FFI is notorious for letting the party be chosen straight away. Here's how this will work.

First three posters get themselves locked into my party.
Those posters get to pick their name & class.
After three posters, I get my class as party leader, but it will be randomly generated *prays for a White Mage*
Everyone who posts (not just party members) can decide whether or not I use the Peninsula of Power to speed things up

I will play on normal difficulty, because I've done this game enough to handle how hard it is. Whatever game mechanics they changed (no more ineffective hits) are up to my discretion. I'm playing this to play it, not to be a masochist.

So rush to my aid, as we seek to save the world!

Also, does it make any sense to get Zero anything except black magic? I'm not sure if any white spells overlap that Strife and Erun can't already handle. However, I'm also aware there are like 4-5 instant death spells, and stuff that was just dumb in the original, because they never worked.

I'll probably need to level a little more to take on the first boss. Thanks to randomness during levels, Zero and Strife got +25 HP, while FFD and Erun got +3...ok then. Still doesn't change the fact that FFD has Chain Mail. He stays in front.

Garland has been KNOCKED DOWN! I refuse to acknowledge the new line. Knock you down, spoony bard, and this guy are sick are staples of FF history. The rest of the translation is fine.

Initial Thoughts

FFD - Party Savior

He's doing a decent job of soaking hits, despite having the lowest HP. He has most, but not all of Warrior's equipment options. That means he has better attack and defense options while still having a variable magic list. He'll specialize in black magic, since I have two different types of white mages in the party to cover different spell choices.

MZero - Glass Cannon

Hate to say it, but Thief is really not helping a whole lot here. He has better defense than the back row mages, but the hammers are actually doing more damage more often! His two benefits are way higher HP (127) and speed/luck. He stays in second, despite 45 more HP. He's also the first to get murdered by a shark. I assume Ninja is the character salvation. It'll be tough going until then.

Strife/Erun - HAMMER OF GOD BROS!

They haven't specialized in spells yet, but I've reached Elfland. Things will start to change soon. Because Strife has more HP for some reason (108 > 85), I had him take Shield. Erun can use Blink on himself to avoid damage whenever he gets nailed, which isn't all that often. Both know Cure and Dia, so undead will not stand a chance.

Given where I am at, I will be stuck in Elfland for quite some time, building my spell list. There's a post somewhere about good Red Mage choices. I'll have to see what Strife and Erun do for their paths. No sense being the same guy.

FFD - Black Mage/Heal Spells/Buffs
Strife - Cure/Dia/Party Buffs+Party Status Recovery
Erun - Cure/Dia/Enemy Debuffs+Enemy Status Effects

I'm hoping the Null skills are entire party based. That way I can save skills for FFD to handle for himself. I don't have high hopes for instant death skills, but I'll grab those as last resorts if I can't think of anything to get. No sense getting Heal for too many people with the items later. FFD can be the sole guy for that.

It's a shame. I'm impressed by the improvements overall, but these guys know fandom is rabid for shit like this. I mean that line is the reason anyone cares about Garland.

Game Mechanics (this is from my memories of the NES version, so may not be accurate to PS1)
Level ups can be "strong" or "weak" for HP gain. Some levels are always "strong" while others are random. A "strong" level gives VIT/4+(21..26) HP; a "weak" level gives VIT/4+1 HP.

Erun got a strong level up to get things back to an even playing field. I got the equipment and Level 3 maxed. Once Level 4 is taken care of, it's off to the Marsh Cave.

Well, I'm going to probably zone out of Raw (cause Raw has been shit lately). However, it will be a decent backdrop to attempt the Marsh Cave. I just want that fucking dungeon over with in one go. I can come back later to raid treasures.

To be fair, does anyone ever not sell the Power Staff? Even if you wanted to keep it for a white mage, you also get a Silver Hammer (Mithril in the newer translations) at the same time, which does the same thing but better.

I kept it for myself, since I didn't get two of those Hammers. I can sell it once I find something else. I remember it being worth a lot of money for some stupid reason.

Party Thoughts

FFD - Heavy Hitter

He's taking damage, but is sticking with everyone else in terms of survivability. He has the best versatility, since he has the highest attack, defense, and black magic options. Fire3 did 250 damage to Lich.

MZero - Holding Serve

It took some time, but getting heavy weaponry allowed him to make up some damage on FFD.

Strife/Erun - Super Undead Killers

Shit physical attack, but Dia with both of them is utter murder on any undead mob.
