It was hilarious listening the olympic-level mental gymnastics on NPR the other day where they were simultaneously defending Kathy Griffin's stunt as comedy while condemning Bill Maher's joke and trying to not acknowledge that it was comedy as well (and, of course, overlooking Kathy's ridiculous attempt to portray herself as a victim)

it's pretty easy to not say the n-word outright but there are technicalities that rightly confuse many white people. it makes it very difficult for those of us trying not to piss anyone off.

I've heard from some people that not listening to rap music is racist. but it's racist to sing along? to play it in my car? I've heard people argue it's racist to listen to it, to criticize it if you're not black. obviously everybody's boundaries are different but I tend to avoid the genre because of this. Rage Against the Machine is an example of a group that puts out a much stronger message than most rap artists and they managed to avoid using the word altogether.

That said, I like Ice Cube and Death Certificate is a great album. But it is also blatantly racist and misogynist and antisemitic if I remember correctly and he has no right to police anybody's choice of language while promoting it.

Anyway I don't really know any black people personally so I may be a total idiot on this subject but that's my onion.

This. I like N.W.A. myself but their music and a solid portion of 90s rap was very racist and even more mysoginistic. But I guess being black rapper gives you a pass for beating women. It's laughable for someone with the lyrical content of ice cube to be policing what someone says about a group of people... not to mention Bill Maher's usage wasn't derogatory whereas N.W.A. was pretty much nothing but derogatory lyrics

The problem I have all of this is, okay sure if he used it randomly as a joke out of context I would be upset, but he used it in the context of making a joke referencing slavery times. "House N*****" is what they were referred as so if he said anything else it wouldn't have made sense. I don't see the big deal.

As much as I dislike Bill Maher, I can understand why he went there because the previous comment had most of us thinking about slavery. It's still a stupid remark, but he should have as much freedom as anybody else to make it.

He's a comedian doing a live show, his job is jokes and sometimes he makes bad ones. Its only offensive if you let it be.
