I like cosmetics, so I'll play with whoever has the best character design. Often I'll create two characters so I can collect the best looks for both designs.

Very rarely. I remember playing as a girl for Pokemon Crystal and I tried it out in some other games but Pokemon was the only game I finished where I chose a girl.

I always make a female character. I hate self-insert and don't want to to be 'me' when I play video games--a medium all about getting away from myself.

Depends on game / options available. I usually do because so many games force a male protagonist that I pick female options in games just to get more variety.

Sometimes certain in character relationships are exclusive to one gender is something that can sway my choice.

If you just make a white guy with skin of the darkest shade then he'll look more Indian than African.

Never on the first playthrough. If it's something like an mmo like wow, I'll make a couple of female characters. Like for example with elves, I'll usually make female ones because the men already almost look like women

More often than not. I know female elven mages seemed like the canon sex, race, and class for the Inquisitor so it's hard breaking that mold.

If it fits the class I will, or if I feel like it, I will. For example, in WoW, all males have big giant bulging muscles. Which makes no sense for a traditional mage, therefore my mage is female.

I always make a woman, unless the game has terrible creation options and the woman always comes out ugly. Dragon Age: Inquisition I made a man because every female I made was just disgusting to look at.

I've definitely made various races. My ME guy was a Pacific islander, plenty of white and Hispanic guys. And then, of course, black guys. Which are usually the ones I play closest to my own belief system.

No, I always play as my own sex, unless there is no choice like in Assassin's Creed Liberation or Tomb Raider.

If there is a canon gender I play as that gender first regardless (so for KotOR II for example I played as a female first).

If it's straight character creation I usually play a guy, however if I can make multiple characters like in an MMO I will generally do that and maybe about 1/3 of my characters will be female. In my current MMO I have literally a dozen characters and four females. Two of the three current mains are female.

The only time I did that I can remember was with Pokemon Crystal. It was the first Pokemon game that allowed you to pick your gender, which felt cool and innovative at the time, so I played through it as a female. I went back to playing males in the games after that, but I guess tried it out once back when the idea of being able to choose a female version of the main character was like holy shit innovative.

Also, do you think small aspects of a character such as skin color, nationality, or ethnicity are the only way a person can relate to a character/avatar?

I'll play as both usually, once with the male character, then a second run with the female.

I haven't played a game in a while and even longer since I played one that you pick your characters gender but I used to for games like kotor or mass effect.

I'd usually play male and what I would actually do.

Then female light side.

Then male dark side.
