I always play as the Shroom King, unless there isn't enough room for the name. Then my name and that of my party is Beer.

99% of the time I make a lady character (and I'm a dude).

I do it because I have more fun that way.

Edit: The only time I make a guy is in situations like Star Trek Bridge Crew, where I really really am put inside of the character itself and I talk to other people and stuff. In those cases, I feel like the character should be me. But in other normal games, I totally roleplay as an entirely different person.

No I'm always a girl in games unless it's a game like Baldur's Gate where various romance options require a male character. I like to experience that stuff but it feels weird to me playing as a dude.

Sometimes

Like in mmo's I feel female characters usually have better casting animations and male characters have better melee animations. All my wow casters were female and melee were male

In RPGs I kinda always make the same character, and it's a woman.

Everything else, especially anything with any kind of realism or online component, I always play as a dude.

I always play as a woman because I have a deeply hidden desire to be one and a longing to submit to the manly man male dude guy that will dominate my very sensual and eager body and soul.

Now that I've given all the "I play as a man because I'm a man!" types what they wanna hear, my real answer is-

It depends on the game, the lore and what my goal is.
I freely play both, because I can.
After a long break, Im back in Skyrim, I'm rolling 2 characters- A hermit male, and poisoner female.
It's how I see it.

I don't remember ever choosing female (I'm a male).

I guess the only exception is League of Legends where the champions' abilities matter, and their aesthetic design / gender doesn't come in to play.

Occasionally. In Star Wars The Old Republic I've made a few female characters because the voice acting is better.

Probably half and half. The more customization there is though the more likely I pick a girl. If gameplay depends on the character then that is the deciding factor.

In most instances, yeah.

However, I played as a girl in Saints Row IV and Splatoon, and have a female secondary avatar in Xenoblade Chronicles X and have a secondary Moon file in which I played as a girl.

I usually do. I prefer to have a bad ass toon that I find sexy in addition to being bad ass. Usually make them brown too because brown skin women are as common in gaming as unicorns IRL.

Probably depends on things. if it's a game like Pokemon, i would've chosen male just because of random stuff like spotpass or publicness. but since X/Y i actually got the opposite version just to go with the female route, to the extent that i pick female first. at least as far as Sun/Moon is concerned.

like someone mentioned. WoW characters are generally too muscly. females are just more varied. like Draenei being tall but willowy, Night Elves are lithe and Humans just being...human. guess Gnomes are quirky, never made one as a semi-main besides a Rogue, and even then, it was more of a slight novelty to gain toys. if there was a game that lets you have extremely extensive character creation to the extent that you can choose voice/build/tone, i'd probably just make a slightly grey/dirty blonde tanned character. just with that slight bit of exoticness/wizened (almost slightly aged) feeling.

Kind of surprised that Ultra Sun/Moon is adding new clothes/hair, wonder if they'll add more varied clothing shapes or at least something more flashy/formal like those pantsuits in X/Y.

EDIT: Almost forgot about mentioning female Draenei/Monk (Diablo 3) voices....it's that kind of exoticness that makes me like them.

The greatest character I ever made was-
Skyrim- male wood elf that looked just like Louie De Palma from the old tv show Taxi.
I used mods, of course, but that character was epic! Alchemy and speech craft only.
I gotta do that again, it was hilarious!!
