Not really. The problem is that IX came out right at the end of the PS1's life span, I think after the PS2 had hit the market in fact, so few people played it. With FFX known to be in the works it got quickly passed over. I don't think it has all that many haters, just a bunch of people who don't know anything about it.

The character designs for IX kinda suck, but I don't recall the game ever getting much hate.

Biggest complaint I'm aware of for IX was the stupid slow battle
load times.

Story and gameplay were great, but yeah aside from Vivi the designs were shit.

Didn't people used to hate Final Fantasy IX?

Not really. Even at the time it was released, people loved it because it went back to the style of game that FFVII and FFVIII sort of shat on, and it had a main character who was actually likeable and not an emo douchenozzle. Add to the fact that it went HARD to the nostalgia well and referenced a ton of stuff from earlier games, and it got a ton of praise. Especially from people who hated FFVIII (which may have been part of the reason WHY it wound up being the sort of game it was in the first place).

It was basically positioned to be the last "old school" Final Fantasy before the franchise stepped fully into the "new era" (ie, implying that the PS2 was a qualitative shift beyond what had gone before), and as such, was pretty well-received. And it's reputation only grew even more positive once people started realizing that the "new era" in general was going to turn out to mostly be a bucket of warm diarrhea (ie, pretty much everything post-FFX).

That's fair but if that's the case you're better off just watching a YouTube video of the story or something.

I disagree. FFXIV has a very heavy flavoring of the old-world stuff and is the #2 MMO ATM. Also XII did try to recapture the feel somewhat even if it got weighed down by stupid in the end.

None of which contradicts anything I said, and none of which matters for people who hate MMOs and think the Final Fantasy brand (or at least the mainstream numbered titles) should never have applied to anything that wasn't a straight-up RPG.

What it tried to do is meaningless compared to what it actually did. Intentions are meaningless when the end result is bland dreck.

People have discussed why FFXII turned out the way it did, with two of the major theories being that the game was massively dragged down by having Vaan as the main character (because the Japanese love their prettyboy teen main characters, but Western audiences likely would have preferred the originally intended protagonist Basch, thinly-veiled Han Solo Balthier, or even Ashe), or because a lot of the gameplay philosophy seemed to revolve around making it play like all the worst aspects of an MMO without any of the actual redeeming qualities of an MMO.

I've loved IX since the first day I put it into my PS1. That intro/menu music sealed it. It was amazing since that first note.

It's sort of both. The plot was blatantly Star Wars which got a bit irksome knowing that the main characters were basically R2-D2 and C-3P0. The gambit system was also super clunky and if you made the horrible crime of 'not really knowing how to best set up gambits' you were in for a LOT of trouble and excess work. Would have been nice to provide an auto-gambit system at the least.

I enjoyed FFIX at its release, but I feel like time has been kinder to it than it has to the two previous games. That highly stylized look ages better than the Nomura look, I guess.

I'm not sure if I ever finished 8 to be honest, I just bought it again for my PC, and will try and finish it sometime just to be sure.

IX wasn't my favorite by a long shot, but it was finishable at least, and better then XIII for me.

XII wasn't my favorite either but was waaay better then XIII (even if I have never been able to finish it again).

I liked X though (although got distracted when trying to replay through the remade version, just past the thunder/lighting planes).

XII I didn't finish either sigh....I still have it, but I heard they may remake it...so I'll wait on that I think.

I finished the first XIII, but none of the sequels, although I own them all. One of them (lightning returns?) had her freaking just riding around on a pony or something while you just watched the screen and didn't do anything or it felt like that to me, at the start. I never got past the intro because of that.

It's not so much Nomura, as it is that a cartoony style ages better than something trying to look more "realistic" during an era of shittier graphics.

It's part of why, to some degree, even FFIV and FFVI look way better than FFVII and FFVIII do now, even though that wasn't necessarily the case THEN.

In a similar vein, sprite art and cel-shaded art seems to age better than art styles that are trying to look more realistic.
