Haven't seen a CYOA on these boards in a while so I'll start one up if there's enough interest.


You're driving on a rural road at 1:37 AM on a Thursday. It is pitch black out, with no lights, and you're only able to see out a few a yards in front of you by virtue of your headlights. You're surrounded by thick woods and the occasional small lake. You cannot remember where you're coming from or what you've done, only that you must keep driving. You think that you might be hungry and thirsty, and while your mouth is dry, you don't seem to care about worldly needs right now. You decide to turn on the radio to something, anything, just to drown away the silence. With not a car in sight, your mind drifts away slowly until something suddenly jumps in front of your car. A loud crash occurs and you see whatever you hit fly out onto the side of the road, down the hill, and possibly near a tree. You have no cell phone, and you need to decide what to do. You choose to

A. Park your car to the side, turn on your hazards, get out of your car and investigate whatever you just hit.

B. Drive away; you don't need the burden of murder on your conscience. Leave this as a Schrodinger's Cat type of scenario.

C. Wait a few minutes in the car, where you are. You're in shock and need a moment to gather your thoughts.

D. Park your car to the side, turn on your hazards, and check your car for something useful before investigating what you just hit.

My headlights are over 15 years old, but they can still easily see 30+ yards ahead of me in the middle of the night.

Besides, who the hell keeps driving in these conditions without a definite destination, much less when you're legitimately suffering from memory loss? "You cannot remember where you're coming from or what you've done?" The fuck? Why do I have the feeling that I'm on the run from something bad?

No cell phone either? lol.

Still in shock, you quickly decide to flee the scene. You can see a streak of blood on the edge of road where something-- or someone-- slid and rolled down the hill. You quickly accelerate down the road, noticing that your front right headlight is no longer working; it must have been smashed during the collision. You constantly check your rear-view mirror and for any oncoming traffic, nervous that the law will pull you over and place you under arrest for a hit and run. You see no cars drive by, fortunately. About two to three miles from the collision, your engine begins to make some noises, followed by a profundity of smoke arising from the hood. You decide to drive the car off of the road, and park it in a thickly wooded area where it is unseen from the road. You exit the car and come to the strange realization that you've been driving in a car that you've never seen before. You're now in a dark, wooded area and need to decide what next steps you will take. You currently have a pack of cigarettes, a lighter, some chewing gum, and your wallet on your person. You decide to

A. Check the car for anything useful, as well as any clues pertaining to whom this car belongs to, before hiking to the nearest building for help (or a way to reach home).

Thinking quickly, you begin searching the car for anything useful. The glovebox is a cluttered mess of various useless papers, but you do manage to find the car's insurance and registration. Only the last name that the car is registered to slightly rings a bell-- perhaps a neighbor from one of the homes by your parents' place, but you're lost as to why you'd have their car. The back of one of the seats contains a box cutter, and the trunk yields a first aid kit, which you put away in a backpack that was full of various college-level books. You take a moment to observe the damage to the car. The front right side of the car is a total wreck; you're surprised that this old hunk of junk was able to take you as far as it could in this condition. There is some blood smeared on it.

Without thinking about possible prints or DNA evidence that you're leaving behind in the car, you walk onto the road to look for the nearest place to call home. You walk in dead silence for about half an hour parallel to the road in the woods, hearing a few cars pass by. It is almost dawn and your visibility is increasing. You finally see what appears to be lodge with a few cars parked out in front. The sign reads "Getaway Paradise," and you reluctantly enter it. With no one at the front desk, you ring the bell, and are finally greeted by a middle aged man. He notices that you're bleeding a little on your face-- you must have hurt yourself slightly in the crash. Thinking on your feet, you tell him that

A. You were in a car accident and hurt yourself. Ask him to dial for the police, and then ask him to let you call home.

B. You tripped and fell while hiking through the woods. You are on vacation and just want a nice place to rest up for a bit. Ask him if you can make a call home.

C. It's none of his business, and that you want to stay in the lodge for a day.

That's how all board-based CYOA's go. The only other option would be for me to write out each and every path but ain't nobody got time for that.

A calm, familiar feeling overcomes you, and you reach for your box cutter. Before you're able to slice the man open, you hear a shrill scream followed by the loud thumping of several footsteps on the wooden floors above. A younger man, probably this lodgekeeper's son, runs into the room and yells for his father to call the police. The lodgekeeper grabs a rifle from underneath the desk, as both men make their way towards the commotion. You decide to follow. You make your way into a vestibule, and up a set of forked stairs to the second floor of this lodge. You see splashes of blood down the wooden hallway as the two men lead the way to the end of the hall, where at least 4 families have assembled. Two women run out from a room, screaming, as a man in his 30's bursts through the door, covered in blood, wrestling a teenage male, presumably trying to bite him. Two men from the group of 12 people try to wrestle the man off but are struggling to do so. The crazed man manages to bite one of the men trying to help the boy. In the chaos, you decide to

A. Help the teenage boy by trying to pry the crazed man off of him.

B. Go back downstairs in order to steal anything useful that is lying around before leaving the lodge

C. Take no action yet. Simply let the events unfold before you.

The violence triggers something inside of you. While the lodgekeeper is busy trying to urge the man to get off of his son, you step behind him and slit his throat, making sure to hit his carotid artery. Blood spurts and you're immediately able to wrestle the rifle out of his hands. The lodgekeeper's son, in shock, drops the cell phone and charges towards you, while most of the gathered families disperse. You take aim and try to fire the rifle, but you left the safety on. The lodgekeeper's son begins to pummel you with full force, trying to wrestle the gun out of your hands. You bite him on his arm, and manage to grab the boxcutter that you dropped earlier. You stab him in the face, and as he reels back in pain, manage to kick him off of you, securing the gun. You take the safety off of the gun and gun the man in pain down-- there is no turning back now, you're a fugitive on the run. Before you can make heads or tails of your surroundings, you notice that the crazed father from earlier has bitten his son to the point that he has passed out from blood loss, and is now running in your direction, shrieking. With limited ammo in the rifle, and other guests still possibly in the lodge, you decide to

A. Conserve ammo by running downstairs. You cannot risk being ill prepared for whatever is coming your way, be it the police the lodgekeeper's son called, or the other guests in the lodge

B. Lure the crazed man into one of the rooms where you can possibly trap him, buying you time to gather anything useful from the lodge

C. Aim for his head! Shoot the crazed man down with whatever ammo you have left, hoping to save some for whatever comes next

You stand your ground and aim the rifle at the crazed man's head. You warn him to stay back, but he runs over screaming, anyways. You aim for his skull, but miss twice and hit him in his torso once. A few feet away from you, you manage to shoot him in the head, putting the man down. This entire floor is a bloodbath at this point, and looks like something out of a slasher film. Turning around, you're immediately hit in the head with a chair by one of the men staying at the cabin. You try fighting him off, but he has you pinned and is calling out for anyone nearby to help him. You figure that it's over, and only a matter of time before police arrive. Suddenly, you hear a loud screech, like someone is in pain. The boy from earlier, bloodied and looking as crazed as his father, runs down the hall towards you. You take advantage of the opportunity and manage to break free of the man's grip, throwing him to the ground. You look in awe as the boy bites and and lashes out at the man. He manages to toss the boy off himself, but the boy keeps coming back at him in a frenzy. You decide to run downstairs while you have some time, grabbing the lodgekeeper's phone and the boxcutter before you go. You see that the rifle no longer has any ammo in it, and you won't have much time to loot the lodge. You go downstairs, rifle in hand, in order to intimidate anyone nearby. You see the two women from earlier scurry out the front door upon seeing you. You quickly search the floor and manage to find the keys to someone's car. The movement and sounds of agony coming from upstairs have ceased, and you can hear some of the guests yelling outside. You begin to hear police sirens in the distance, but can see from a window that the cavalcade of cars are driving in another direction completely. Strange, given that this is a rural area and there wouldn't be many emergency calls at this hour. You quickly find use the car alarm to see which car the keys belong to, and leave the area. You decide that the best next steps are to

A. Drive home- use the cell phone's GPS to find out where you are and how to get home, disposing of the murder weapons along the way.

B. Call home to check if anyone picks up before you decide to make the journey home; whatever that was in the lodge, you have a feeling that it wasn't just two people having a psychotic episode.

C. Visit the closest supermarket and gather food, water, and any other pertinent supplies

D. Drive to the nearest police station and confess your crimes

It is 8 AM now. You can't help but shake the feeling that whatever disturbing behavior you saw in the lodge wasn't an isolated psychotic episode. You turn on the car radio, and sure enough the emergency alert system alerts you that the nation is under military lockdown as a result of a rapidly spreading disease that appears to induce psychosis in many individuals; it is believed to be airbourne and transmitted by bodily fluids, and civilians are warned to travel to the nearest military safe zone to await further instruction. Without checking in on your family first, you decide that gathering supplies for yourself and your family is the best course of action, so you turn on the gps on the cellphone you picked up earlier and look for the nearest supermarket. It happens to be in a major city, but you realize now that you are quite far from home, by at least a day's drive. You arrive on a major street, a few blocks from the supermarket, but see that traffic is backed up, possibly for miles. The scene is one of complete chaos. Car doors are wide open, there is some degree of looting, and you can hear shots being fired. To top it all off, you can see some military units being deployed on rooftops, and various armored cars driving through nearby streets. You reassess the situation and decide to

A. Avoid the chaos- reverse your car and drive out of this city; you can always find supplies at another time

B. Embrace the bedlam- drive on sidewalks and try to reach the supermarket by any means in the safety of your car

C. Take the risk by leaving your car where it is and walk on foot to the supermarket

D. Abandon your car, find the nearest soldier(s), and ask them for a safe escort to a military zone.

Upon seeing the hysteria, traffic, and military deployment, you decide that the supermarket is a bad idea; who knows, maybe the infection is spreading faster than you think. Given its airborne nature, the infection will probably spread readily, mean that you'll be seeing far more infected soon. You ultimately decide to book it and drive out of the city and go home.

It is a day's drive to your home town. You decide to call your wife but cannot reach her. You do, however, receive an updated voicemail from her that asks where you and her parents have been, hopes you're OK, and informs you that she has taken your two 6 year old fraternal twins to a nearby military checkpoint. While this gives you some solace, you can't help but doubt that this infection is out of the military's hand. The infection has, however, at the very least bought you some time away from the law given the horrific murders you've committed in the past 24 hours. Upon reaching the highway you can see that everyone else has had the same idea. Getting out of your car, you can see that makeshift military checkpoints have been set up along the way. You get back onto local roads and try finding a route home. You can see shattered store windows, people running everywhere, hear screams, sirens blaring, and loud aircraft buzzing around. With some savvy driving, some illegal sidewalk detours, and caution, you reach a relatively quiet street intersection. There are some stores that appear unlooted and only a handful of people are in this area. It may be safe to loot for now, but any delay now may cost you later as you encounter military stops and possibly infected. You decide to

A. Loot the immediate area, breaking into any stores to look for any useful food or supplies

B. Forget this area and drive straight towards home. After all, your home does have some supplies on hand.

C. Sit in your car for ten minutes to scope out the area before you decide to loot it. Abandoning your car for a moment may be a dangerous prospect.

D. Look for someone with supplies and mug them using your boxcutter and rifle for intimidation.

It is now 11 AM. You decide to avoid the tantalizing prospect of supplies as you remember your duty to your family. Your home will have fewer supplies than any sort of store but at least you'll be close to your family and familiar with the area. You continue driving towards home via local routes, avoiding the sheer chaos around you. This continues for about two hours until you reach a major metropolitan intersection where you can see several motionless bodies on the ground. There are two military vehicles parked in front that have stopped a car and appear to be screening people before letting them pass. You figure that this area must not be secure yet, and that the military is still trying to get a grasp of the situation. You also see several parked police cars, with their sirens on, all along the road on both sides. The sound of gunfire is profuse here; the situation must be getting worse. You can see that the soldiers have gas masks on their faces, presumably to avoid inhaling the disease. You suddenly hear a knock on your window and see a young pregnant woman holding hands with what appears to be her daughter. You lower your window and hear her plight; this woman usually takes public transport home and is stranded without safe transport. She wants you to escort her as far as you can to her home, but it is slightly out of your way. You find it peculiar that she hasn't gone to the military or police nearby for help, but there are no outward signs of infection in either the mother or the daughter. Suddenly, you see at least three dozen infected, bloody and wailing run across the street from an adjacent block towards your direction. The eight or so soldiers begin firing but it is clear that they will be overwhelmed. You decide to:

A. Be a hero; escort the mother and daughter to their home, but first try to run down as many infected as you can in order to help the soldiers out

B. Help the soldiers out, but leave the mother and daughter behind

C. Help the mother and daughter out, but avoid the fight entirely

D. Wait for the soldiers to be overrun, then drive over any remaining infected and living soldiers. Any military-grade equipment you can secure is sure to be useful later.
