I'm pretty sure the switch blew when I turned it off (it made a strange buzzing sound then never worked again). I'm not comfortable messing with electrical. Just curious what's a fair rate to fix that? Our usual contractor seems too busy and disinterested.

Like $50? It's not that hard.

That's about what I was thinking. I actually know a bunch of electricians, but I'm not comfortable asking them because I don't want to accidentally guilt trip anyone. I'd feel awkward.

Honestly if you just shut off that circuit, you can replace it no problem.
You're honestly just paying for gas.

Like, a lightswitch? Hopefully 0$ because any idiot with a screwdriver is able to replace one in about 10 minutes.

I mean, shit. I don't even bother turning off the power to replace them.

If you actually know some, pick the one you like best and throw em the work. They may even just do it for free, worst case you give your friend some work hopefully.

I think the box itself containing the switch shorted out. Our house was built by an electrician, but he was a dumbass so the wiring is weird.

They're all super busy and it's a waste of time, which is why I don't feel comfortable asking. Maybe I'll just make a vague FB post and leave it to fate.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. I'm not an electrician so I'm very likely talking out of my ass, and you're also in Canadia as I recall, but light switches usually just have the 'hot' wire coming in through the switch and going up to the light. Sometimes they'll have a ground, but (unless Canadia is different) the light itself should have a ground which makes the ground from the switch somewhat superfluous.

I'm not sure if there are any situations in relatively modern electrical where this would not be the case.
