I worked at Great America in a hot dog stand at 13, I washed dishes at a Little Ceasers before that, and I seasonally worked at Christmas Tree lots and a few other jobs under the table from age 9 up.

You can totally get jobs as a kid, although usually you won't be working where people can see you.

Or he could just be a late-blooming teenager, but you're probably right it's more likely that he has an ultra rare condition than the most obvious answer.

Btw, pretty much universally Mc Donalds hire 14 year olds (few stats are an exception). I think that is the min but there may be a few that hire 13 year olds over the table.

A 14 year old can easily look like an 11 year old though, so yeah, could just be a 14 year old who looks young for his or her age.

I have never seen a McDonald's hire a 14 y/o. In general, major chains don't hire kids under the age of 16 since it's illegal in many states (outside of certain industries) and there are major restrictions in others. Keep in mind that those laws don't apply to parents/guardians, so the owner's kid would be fine.

And keep in mind that children under the age of 16, by federal law, cannot work more than 3 hours a day and 18 hours per week (excluding entertainment, farming, etc). Given that some states mandate minimum 4 hour shifts, that would make children unemployable.

Here is a link to their hiring policy. If you look more in depth they can hire younger then that in some states but rarely do. 14 for cashiers is the norm though (not the norm age to hire, just the norm minimum age).

Also, just because something is the law, doesn't mean it's followed. I know I got plenty of jobs before the age of 14, and while this was 30+ years ago, I don't think the laws have changed that much. Heck, I worked construction under the table in middle school lol.

I mean do you really think labor laws haven't changed in 30+ years?

Honestly I have no clue, but again, it was probably illegal then and happening all the time. I really doubt I was supposed to be able to work at age 9-11 in the late 70's and early 80s, but I sure did. I'm sure it happens now, heck people who are from other countries work all the time as well, it's pretty much the same thing.

It's not new, and while some things have changed, it's certainly still going on today.

When I was in high school working at a mcds they hired a crap ton of 14 year olds, it was an annoying revolving door of shit heads who called in sick ever weekend until they quit/got fired and then the next batch of kids would come in and repeat the process. This is Canada though granted there were plenty of things that McDonald's did that wasn't quite legal for a work place.

I remember hearing about a franchise owner losing his franchise cause he fired all of his Canadian employees and hired a bunch of filipinos to take their place.

When I was 17 I worked graveyard at a Carl's Jnr while going to a vocational school during the day (8 hours m-f), and they would hire tons of illegals along with a homeless guy that would just work for a few months every year. They also claimed a few of the employees where mentally challenged even though they where not (I guess they got some kind of bonus if they hired them or something). I actually really enjoyed the job though...most people say they hate working at fast food places but I loved mastering the cooking, and even enjoyed working the drive through at night (tons of people going home from parties etc, was a blast).

I generally enjoyed almost every job I did except for working at Safeway, and working in the TV department of Sears in Vancouver WA (right across the bridge from portland where there is no sales tax). Give me a job standing around not doing anything all day, and I will want to kill myself in a week.

Probably helped that you were doing graveyard, most people who come at night are usually pretty chill. It's during the day you get the shit heads who come to flex their power upon lowly kids that aren't allowed to do anything but take it.

Major corporations are less likely to take stupid little risks, especially when there's a labor surplus already. Honestly, most companies already hate hiring minors as-is so it's unlikely they'd go with super-minors.
