That scene where the galaxy arrives is quite possibly one of the biggest payoff scenes I've ever seen. Not only are there ships arriving every moment, as the camera pans back to the Reapers, you STILL hear ships coming in.

Yep and Dragon Age: Origins was great too-- it should have been the blueprint used for the Priority: Earth mission in ME3. Bioware had done really great finales for several games in a row (the ending section of ME1 is great too and DA2's ending sequence is pretty good) and then just crapped all over the bed in ME3.

My favorite video game endings ever:

Catherine (True Neutral/True Chaos endings are loved equally to me)
Modern Warfare 3 (cathartic af)
MGS2 (dat inspiration)
The Last of Us (Joel did nothing wrong)

It was great, but my personal favorite was Project Overlord. Seeing David in that horrifying thing was hard, but the paragon interrupt being to fucking pistol whip the monster responsible and threatening to kill him if Shep ever saw them again felt good like nothing else.

I thought the ending sequence of the first game was much better. Get to hear the best music in the series in-game and then go off to save the Citadel. ME2's Suicide Mission was pretty good, I just didn't like it as much.

The nice thing about 1 was that everything about it felt tactical. Like, the combat animations felt controlled instead of wide open, you tended to have small groups of enemies instead of fighting off an army, sometimes you had timers (but they didn't suck), stuff like that.

The actual combat sucked but the polish went a looooong way.
