They could have played the whole thing off and Todd very rashly and quickly decided to shoot the kid. But if that kid mentioned anything at all to an adult that people were by those tracks... with that equipment.. and the adults he told realized the train was robbed.. it could have potentially turned into something very problematic. A high chance of them being exposed? Perhaps not.
