42. The Powerpuff Girls

Seen: All of it

Favorite character: HIM

I never watched the show much as a kid, because it was one of my sisters favorite shows, but I was a boy and boys didn't watch girls shows. Mostly I just saw it if she had it on. But as an adult, I had a girlfriend who was also a big Powerpuff Girls fan, so we went back and watched it on Netflix. And goddamn, it's legitimately really good. The humor is definitely a little above its intended age group, and I could appreciate its jokes way more now than I could've as a kid. My favorite episode features HIM (who, btw, is one of the best villains I've seen in ANYTHING; he's both terrifying and hilarious) threatening to make the professor "pay" if the Powerpuff Girls didn't obey his every whim. Eventually, they fail, and the professor pays... for his breakfast. "Your flapjacks are good, HIM, but they're not THAT good!" I cried from laughter. There's also the particularly impressive episode where the Powerpuff girls are excluded from what is essentially the Justice League/Avengers because they're girls, at which point they demolish them at every challenge in what was one of the coolest takes feminism in kids shows. Also, hands down my favorite moment from the show:

41. Wilfred

Seen: All of it (the American one, anyway)

Favorite character: Elijah Wood

Elijah Wood is just great in everything, really, but there's something special about him here. It's a way more down to earth than many of his roles, while also being delightfully bizarre. The basic premise is that Elijah Wood is in love with his neighbor, but sees her dog as a grown man in a dog suit, and he's the only one who sees him that way. I feel like magical realism like this is really rare for television, which is part of what makes the show special. It's never entirely clear whether or not Elijah is just crazy or if Wilfred actually is some supernatural being, but beyond that, there's also some really deep and powerful messages about depression and self-acceptance, matched with a funny buddy comedy. It's a show I feel like I needed to see, which I can't say often.

40. Daredevil

Seen: Both seasons

Favorite character: Wilson Fisk

Daredevil has always been one of my favorite superheroes, ever since I've been a kid. Maybe it was the sleek, badass design and maybe it was the idea of a blind guy just kicking all sorts of ass, but the premise has always really appealed to me. I remember being curious about what they could really do when they first announced the MCU was going to be making Netflix series for Marvel properties, but the excitement was there immediately. Once it came out, I was ecstatic. Murdock was exactly as I imagined him. Wilson Fisk completely exceeded every expectation I had, and easily became one of my favorite supervillain portrayals to date. And the fight scenes! Christ, the fight scenes. Yeah, Jesse called it on this one, the hallway scene was one of the best things I've ever seen on TV. I'm still blown away by it.

It's really interesting watching that next to Luke Cage's hallway fight

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlSc6B8GcQM

They're both thrilling but in completely different ways. Daredevil is really just a person. He's a good fighter but he's fragile and you can really feel the pain he experiences.

But Luke Cage is exactly the opposite. It's a power trip. He throws people through walls and walks directly into machine gun fire.

uh.... you didn't watch the whole series or you were not paying attention then because they explain it all by the end of the 4th season.

I'm actually still waiting for them to release the 3rd and 4th seasons on Blu-ray but it doesn't seem like it will ever happen. :(

No, trust me, I definitely watched it all. I really don't think the whole "Dog God" thing in the finale was supposed to be taken literally. I think, if anything, it can be seen as Ryan's mind trying to find explanation for everything. Even Ryan doesn't seem to fully believe everything he discovers, and there's some intentional ambiguity still left in the end: The camera blocks the final view Ryan looking into the basement and Ryan finding the tennis ball in the ocean. The ambiguity is one of the things I love about the series. Every time it attempts to explain itself, nothing ever completely lines up.

And even if you take the final explanation at face value, I still wouldn't say it ultimately matters. The real focus of the show was always Ryan's depression and mental health, which was just sort of shown via magical realism (which again, I never see in TV and would love to see more of)

Man the Netflix Marvel guys really like hallway fights

That's definitely another good one, and also a cool comparison with Daredevil's fight. Punisher is basically a killing machine here. Like Daredevil, he's not invincible, but he's also not one to let his enemies get back up.

39. Food Wars!

Seen: Both seasons

Favorite character: Satoshi

It took me a while to really get into anime. To date, I've only seen a handful of them, but for the most part I've enjoyed what I've seen. Food Wars! is the most recent anime I've watched through, and I started it around the same time I was regularly watching Cutthroat Kitchen. I'm not a huge cooking show person but I do like indulging on them occasionally. Food Wars scratched that itch and so much more, going incredibly in depth on things like the cooking techniques and what makes the food so good. It's like if someone had made an entire show about the delicious-looking buffet from Spirited Away. It's incredibly over-the-top, and that's probably the best thing about it. I never get tired of the reactions people have to eating the food, with my favorite being the wonderful Magical Cabbage sequence. I also found myself getting really invested in the characters, much moreso than I thought I would, and was excited to see that Soma, the hero of the show who's basically a cooking prodigy, didn't always win just because he was the star. It's just a really unique show that hit almost all the right notes for me, with my only complaint being the needlessly excessive fanservice.

38. House of Cards

Seen: Seasons 1-4, about half of 5 so far

Favorite character: Zoe Barnes

Now, it's getting to the point where it's hard to rate the show this high. After season 2, the show took a pretty steep nosedive in quality, just because a lot of the thrill is gone. In short, I feel like this is mostly because season 1 and two were about Francis' rise to power. Seasons 3-5 have basically been about him struggling to maintain that power, which simply doesn't have the same thrill. Killing off my favorite character in the second season premiere didn't help either. But even at its worst, House of Cards still brings some excellent moments, with one of the best recent ones being the destruction of Frank and Freddy's relationship. And putting that aside, the first two seasons are just so excellent, with Kevin Spacey giving what is hands down one of the best TV performances I've seen, and with David Fincher's style carrying over throughout, even when he's not directing.

37. The Walking Dead

Seen: All 7 seasons

Favorite dead character: Glenn (HM Hershel)
Favorite alive character: Maggie (HM: Carol)
POPs Owned: Michonne, Hershel, and a misprint Carol with two gun hands

I know the show gets a lot of hate. And I know, it's pretty much deserved. But I'll be damned if any of that stops me watching it. Say what you will but it's still one of the most exciting shows around, with some excellent hateable villains and some great large-scale action sequences. It's flawed, but there's a reason the show is as big as it is. It's kind of just become a thrilling worldwide event that I'm pleased to be taking part in. For every cheap bullshit trick the show tries to pull on me (looking at those crappy fakeout deaths) it still matches it with a handful more of excellent television (Eugene becoming Negan in S7, sniper Carol in S5, Governor's attack on the prison in S4, etc.). Fuck Fear the Walking Dead though.

and an equally large base of people who consider it pretty bad, so much so that it's sort of become an easy target

I actually haven't loved TWD since Season 1. I thought it was a revolutionary concept then.

Then in Season 2 people are like, hangin around on a farm with their hands on their hips.

I actually quit there, but I eventually marathoned Season 3 and 4 to get back into it, and sporadically watched Season 5 and 6 in a detached manner cause the show moved too slow to care enough to watch it every week-- Season 7 is when I officially dropped it for good, not even attempting to watch any of em after the first few because Negan literally did the same thing every episode with his droning WHAT'S YOURS IS MINE promos and it was like "okay this isn't even pretending to not be the same thing over and over now"

36. Black Mirror

Seen: All 3 seasons

Favorite episode: San Junipero

I can thank B8 for introducing me to this show. I didn't see any of it until all three seasons had been released on Netflix, and B8 was very briefly freaking out about how amazing it was. So, I finally sat down and checked it out, and B8 was right! Damn good show. The shows basically just like 20 mini-movies, all with pretty shocking production value and excellent self-contained stories. There's not much to say about the series as a whole, since it's so different from episode to episode, but each one is pretty fantastic, with San Junipero being an obvious standout (though White Christmas rivals it as well).

35. Jessica Jones

Seen: The 1 season

Favorite character: Jessica

Going into the Marvel Netflix tetralogy, I fully expected Daredevil to be my favorite of the four. I had already been a Daredevil fan, and hell, I had never even heard of Jessica Jones. The thought was only further cemented when Daredevil came out and was really, really good. But here comes Krysten Ritter and David Tennant, proving me wrong by delivering two darkly impressive performances. I have to give a lot of credit to this show. Not only is it a solid hero/villain romp, it also dives headfirst into the dark, serious issue of consent, not hesistating to bring Purple Man down from the idea an over-the-top goofy supervillain to real, human scumbag willing to sink as low as rape and lacks the self-awareness to even recognize his actions as disgusting. It's a heavy premise executed powerfully, playing out more as a supernatural detective thriller than a superhero show.

34. Louie

Seen: All 5 seasons

Favorite character: Louie

Almost left this one off the list, which would've been a damn shame given how good it is. Really, if you like Louis CK, you'll like the show. If you don't, well, check it out anyway, maybe it'll change your mind. A lot of it is just really relateable; Louie's an easy guy to sympathize with for much of the show, and even the out-there segments manage to be hilarious. Perhaps the best episodes are the ones revolving around Louie and his kids; there's just something extra enjoyable about him trying to parent (with one of my favorite episodes focusing entirely on him painstakingly trying to fix a doll for his daughters, just for a moment of happiness Christmas morning). Not entirely sure what else to say here. It's great directing, great writing, and one of the best balances of dramatic and funny on TV.

33. Westworld

Favorite character: Robert Ford

Seen: The one season, so far

So I was looking for another show to watch during the downtime of a certain other HBO show, and suddenly it seemed like everyone was suddenly talking about Westworld. I was a little hesitant of the premise (a western amusement park run by rogue AI is a bit of a stretch). What immediately drew me in was Anthony Hopkins, who I've been a fan of since Silence of the Lambs (like literally everyone else). Yeah, the premise is weird, but it's shockingly impressive. Of course Hopkins nails his role, but I found he really split the spotlight with Thandie Newton, who blew me away with her performance. I found myself obsessed with the mystery of the show, never really knowing what to expect, and I feel that's kind of rare from a lot of current shows. The one complaint I do have is the way they handled Elsie, who I HOPE isn't dead, because if she is that off-screen death was weak

32. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Seen: Both seasons so far

Favorite character: White Josh

This show caught me by surprise not just beause I'm not typically a CW fan, but also because I was a Rachel Bloom fan before the show. Seriously, check out some of her early YouTube videos, they're hilarious! (I Steal Pets is probably my favorite.) So when the show released, I was pretty ecstatic, and even moreso once I realized it was hands down the best musical comedy on television (not that that's saying a whole lot, but fuck man, it's hilarious). The music is excellent, the characters are flawed but lovable. I'm usually stray from romantic comedy, but something about this show just hits all the right notes. I absolutely recommend it!
