in case anyone is wondering what inspired this topic I have my own circumstances that I think are fairly rare. right now the only Pokemon game I currently own is X, but I've owned a number of Pokemon games in the past. I was wondering how common it was for people to be the type to have bought a lot of Pokemon games over the years but also to not own any of them anymore.

for the full rundown

I got Red, Blue, and Yellow all when they came out. I remember playing them a ton as a child.
I got Silver and Gold both.
By the time Crystal came out I was more or less done with Pokemon.
I do remember managing to get Ruby as a gift later on,
But I don't think I would have ever spent my own money on it or anything.
I did play the game a bit but I didn't complete it.
At some point between my childhood and my late teen years I lost or sold most of these games.
I honestly can't remember what happened to most of them.
The only exception is Pokemon Gold.
I actually remember still having the cart when I was 19 for some reason.
I gave it to my girlfriend to let her borrow it,
But after we broke up I never bothered to get it back from her. Whoops.
Well, at least I know what happened to one of them!

Despite not feeling very enthusiastic about Pokemon since about the GSC generation, I still found myself buying the games from time to time. I almost never got any later Pokemon game at launch. Actually, I can't remember a single later game in the series where I did. I also did not ever buy like the entire full generation as I did with the original RBY. But I do remember getting the 'urge' to play Pokemon again every few years during my 20's. Each time this happened I'd buy the newest game, play it for a bit (10-20 hours) and then get bored and be like 'lol never again.' And then of course it would always happens again.

At two of those times I played games via emulation. I remember playing both Crystal and Emerald by emulator and beating them both. But after a while I started to move away from emulating games and started to just buy the stuff I wanted to play.

To the best of my memory I had at some point...

Pearl: The gameplay was very slow and this was a huge drawback for me.
Platinum: I heard the game speed was increased so I ended up trying this a few years later. It was a little faster but still very slow and I couldn't get more than halfway through the main game.
White: I just felt bored most of the way through this game. I didn't play it to completion. I remember this is around when my friends started telling me that Pokemon is more fun to play competitively and the single player modes generally aren't that fun anyway.

The above three games were all lost when my original collection of DS games was stolen. At some point I had around 60-70 DS games that I collecting during my late teens and early 20's. I currently have a much smaller collection of like 15-20 DS and 3DS games that I also barely play. But at least I didn't spend as much money on them!

X is the game I own right now. I basically... don't like it at all. The only feature I enjoy is the fact that you can customize your character and dress up. I wish I was joking here. The single player campaign is way too easy and there's too much garbage going on that I don't really care about. I don't think I even made it halfway through the game and I doubt I'll ever touch it again.

So yeah I've been feeling lately that I wanted to play some Pokemon but I really don't want to play X. It's a bummer since I no longer own any of the other Pokemon games. I think if I had access to HG or SS that would be my first choice. It would be something "fresh" while being able to play one of the classic games that I know I loved a lot the first time. Oh well.

Thoroughly agreed on Pearl. I hadn't played a Pokemon game since Silver, and picking that up like 4-5 years later... was not a pleasant transition. It also really annoyed me that the game tried to create a more elaborate storyline without remotely innovating the basic design of the game (eight gyms, one Elite Four.) The Elite Four had some pretty tough Pokemon IIRC, but I managed to beat them all with Gyarados (one of my favorite Gen 1 dudes) + Dragon Dance.

I liked White (or Black, but I think White's the one I played.) If I were still super-into-Pokemon or even games in general, I think I could have really gotten into it. Changing the protagonist to a teenager instead of ten-year-olds was a great move. Still not a huge fan of the story, but it felt significantly less cringe-worthy than Pearl. The best change in B/W IMO - aside from speeding the game up - is that the new region is all new Pokemon, and lots of them were really strong. I actually had space to experiment and get to know the new guys instead of just relying on my old favorites, and that sense of exploration was great.

Not great enough to get far into the byzantine post-game, though. 'Catching 'em all' has become a joke to me and the world just doesn't engross anymore. But I thought it was a really nice contrast against Pearl.

Yeah I think if White had been a totally original game I could have gotten into it. it's definitely not a flaw of the game that I did not enjoy it. More, it's just my own fault for having burned myself out on Pokemon already. I honestly doubt I'll ever again in my life be able to seriously get invested into a Pokemon game no matter how good it is.

X though does seem like it's just kinda bad. not sure what the consensus opinion is though so it's possible I'm about to get dogpiled by Pokemaniacs here

I enjoyed X a lot. I put well over 300 hours into it with all the extra breeding I did after the main game to complete the Pokedex.

Black/White was probably my least favorite of all the main games. Black/White 2 was quite good, however.

Formerly owned Red, Yellow, Gold, and Silver cartridges. The Silver that I currently own is a second copy bought after getting rid of the first.

Also forgot to mention Pokemon Shuffle on 3DS, although I only downloaded it when it was first released, and have not updated any of the new content or levels added after launch.

this is exactly how I feel about X

a couple years back I did a randomized run of FireRed that was pretty fun. basically there's a program that lets you randomize the pokemon in the game (starters, wild pokemon, trainer pokemon). I got bored of regular FireRed but this did a pretty good job keeping things fresh.
