It feels like the Dany story lost momentum years ago and she's been carried entirely by dragons for some time, which I think is partially intentional - she represents entitlement and Jon Snow represents merit.

man when they said that Stannis left dragonstone undefended I didn't think Dany could literally just walk in there and no one is around.

where is like the steward?
the people who keep the place clean?

I guess Stannis was just planning on never coming home?

I definitely would have liked to see the residents of Dragonstone bending the knee to Dany, but I'd figured based on the trailer and the pacing of the season that they wouldn't include that. I think a single wordless shot would have sufficed, though.

So I was thinking about that but then like, with the time Stannis and his crew were gone for and depending on how much he would have left behind considering he was going to war.....wouldn't whoever was stuck there possible have starved? Like if they didn't expect Stannis to be gone for so long or something, and it's a pretty remote island. So I kind of let it slide.

This is just me, but I'm tired of how many episodes need to end on Dany, even if she's completely irrelevant to the story of the episode.

6x10 had the wrong ending. It should have ended with the King in the North scene. This episode was correct to end on Dany, because the episode really did revolve around her landing on Dragonstone.

Seriously, the episode built towards that pretty clearly to the point it was absolutely fine to end with her this time.

Only time I've ever rolled my eyes at the Dany overexposure is the episode ending last year where she rallied the Dothraki - felt like I'd seen it before a whole bunch of times. Tonight was fine though. Complaining about her here feels like

And let's be completely honest, apart from the white walkers Dany is the one driving the plot now (she was before, also). John and Cersei are mounting a defence, but Daenerys and the walkers are the ones seeking to make change and cause conflict. And part of the deal with the Walkers is they're a fair bit more mysterious. So really she should be getting more time than ever at this point

that makes no sense because the people he left behind would've been exactly the people who made sure the food and economy situation on the island remained stable so the population of the island would not all die

so that he could come home and his entire castle wasn't an empty ruin

either way glad to see other people finally come around on show dany in particular being bad

episode was pretty good otherwise. exceeded all of my fairly low expectations.

But that's why I say considering he was going off to war he might have weighed the risks of needing everything he had with him since he was pretty much the underdog, only advantage he really had was being the older brother and thus better claim. And of course Melisandre but people weren't sure of that at the time.

the show often doesn't really acknowledge that there are smallfolk in the westeros cities. since season 3, winterfell and king's landing in particular can have the impression of being solely filled with soldiers, because we focus solely on their castles.

essos has shown more civilians, but almost all of them somehow have been terrorists.

i'm not sure we've ever seen smallfolk in on dragonstone. (by the way, how amazing did that castle look in 7x01? i don't think we had that in S2-3. i feel similarly about riverrun in 6x07-08.)

It is nice to see a pretty resounding opinion of Daenarys's awfulness. Been on that train since like Season 2.

Now if we could just get everyone to come around on Sansa being fucking horrendous, instead of YAAAAS SLAY GIRL SLAY every time she says something stupid to Jon, that'd be great.

I watched the Story So Far recap special before the episode tonight, and in it someone mentions that Sansa is starting to show qualities of Cersei. And then this episode happens and with that note in mind, it doesn't even feel like they're trying to be subtle about it.

Yeah it was funny because Jon had just reprimanded her for trying to repeat some of them.

Admittedly I have a particular amount of disdain for the non-Arya Stark women but, my god does she have no business talking down to Jon about anything at any time at any place. He's been through more than her ten times over and knows what he's doing.

It's going to lead to Jon meeting Dany, which I guess is kinda cool?

Yeah, but that relies on Sam being an idiot about what Stannis told him. I meant something that doesn't do that.

also forgot to mention that one shot of oldtown made me think it was set in mordor. even looked kinda like the eye of sauron might have been at the top there

Dragonstone being completely empty is silly, but I mean, it wouldn't even rank on a list of ridiculous things regarding Stannis the show has done.

Sansa is fine. Jon's right that she was undermining him in the hall, but all Sansa was doing was speaking the general view Westeros holds, not even getting into her own personal reasons for hating anyone who sided with Ramsay. If anything, it's kind of weird to see Jon make the "heroic" and "gracious" move there without more background/context. plus it was pretty hilarious watching littlefinger's reactions to the spectacle. man he just loves this kind of stuff so much. If I'm worried about Sansa at all it's that outside of Littlefinger and the resolution to whatever he's up to it kinda feels like her role is "done" if Jon is King in the North and commands Winterfell it feels like she's just there. It'd be a more interesting dynamic if she were made Lady of Winterfell and Jon was working with her as Lord Commander and she had the leverage of being the one who the North ultimately answers to. (Although even that wouldn't last long once word of Bran's survival and return made it)

Sansa learned the wrong lesson. Ned's biggest mistake was going South and surrounding himself with enemies. Robb's biggest mistake was alienating his allies (specifically and relevantly, the Karstarks!). Jon is doing the opposite of both.

Do you not think she's literally the best candidate for that at this point though? Like sure I get the earlier complaints but at this point the plot kind of demands her to be strongly featured and central.

I understand the fatigue from their over the top favouritism towards her in earlier seasons, but right now it seems necessary to present her like this.

the ending to 7x01 is perfect, though. it's the endings to 6x10 (setting sail) and 6x06 especially (the random drogon reappearance) that undermine it.

7x01 is built-up to - dany doesn't appear, but the entire episode focuses on her landing, brings up stannis and the island, the targ ancestral home, the dragongalss

No it wasn't. Their mistakes were trusting people who shouldn't be trusted.

That's what I thought. It felt very much like she was being kept for last while (nearly) everyone else talked about her. Cersei, Euron, Sam, Jorah

And like I said. Her arriving in Westeros is a huge event. She is the danger to Cersei and a problem for the other characters (or a solution). Apart from the White Walkers, she is driving it right now. She demands centrality and focus and even something like tonight's ending is significant in my eyes.

It's only slightly disappointing because spoilers, trailers and everything else very quickly spoiled that she would go to Dragonstone, so it feels like nothing happened.

The inevitability of Dany is underwhelming but I don't mind her, otherwise. I get why Dany goes on last, and if that results in money for a show like this and we get good battle scenes and effects as a result, fine. In general, everything else in the show is much more interesting.

Unlikely. Now that this war is over and those houses lost their best fighters, what exactly do they have to betray with? They will fight with the North in the great war. There's not going to be any point that they can execute a betrayal anyway because there's little chance Cersei's able to send anyone up to the North, what with all the crap they've gotta deal with.
