4th palace beated during my weekend off. Favorite so far, I love desert levels and the music is my favorite so far.

Maxed Chariot, Lovers, Temperance, and Sun.

Maxed Charm, everything else is at 4.

Currently on 9/6 and in Mementos to do all like 8 requests I have. Also abusing Sandman w/Pulinpa and high luck to make bank off the bosses in there.

Last time I went in here like a month ago in game time I walked out with 1.5 million. And then spent it all on fusing/re-summoning because making good Persona is something I lose hours of time to.

I never bother with status effects in Persona. Just old habits from other JRPGs where they don't matter much, but they're pretty effective in Persona.

I dunno if I'm being efficient with my fusions either because I mostly try to use them to make new Personas to fill out the Compendium and don't bother re-fusing old ones, but I guess I should instead of holding onto weak ones I get in battle.

Status effects just shouldn't even be a thing in RPG's honestly. They're just frustrating when used against you and are useless half the time for you.

Buffs/debuffs and slow/haste/delay type effects are okay though.

I mostly focus on buffs/debuffs in Persona, Confuse on Mementos bosses just seems to be one of the best ways to make money in the game, and I hate not having enough money.

I probably made closer to 3 million last time I was in Mementos but I spent a lot of it powering up Sandman through the Gallows with Queen's Necklace, making sure Luck went up, and then saving/deleting/re-summoning both to get Sandman's luck to 40.

Mementos bosses now throw out at least 40K when they toss out money and the higher level bosses throw out closer to 100K. I just go in with Joker alone and Pulinpa then block until it runs out and repeat until I get bored. With SP Adhesive 3 I can go forever. Some bosses it doesn't work on and some are trickier than others though!

Status effects are fine so long as they're interesting, either in terms of design or gameplay. Earthbound (and the Mother series as a whole) is a great example of this, with stuff like homesickness and heat stroke in the desert. Strategically-timed stuns when an enemy telegraphs they're going to do powerful attack feel fantastic, and the eureka moments of figuring out poison is a good tactical choice against certain enemies is great.

Really, as long as we don't go Pokemon-style "Life's a coin flip!", I'm good with them.

Trails is pretty good about status effects. They work most of the time, even in a surprising amount of boss fights. I still can't get over how you can petrify the Chapter 1 bosses.

They'd be downright broken in Cold Steel if not for the fact that the other ways you can break the game are just that much better. >_>

Yeah I guess the thing is just this is essentially never the case for me. Other than the specific status effect exceptions I listed, almost every instance I can think of status effects are either a non-factor or "flip a coin to see if your party gets wiped this turn".

Also, I'd argue Pokemon is the best implementation of status effects by a country mile, but maybe that's just me.

Not gonna lie I don't even remember an instance of status effects other than Delay or Forte or the CP Regen status even coming up in Cold Steel. ...I may have super autopilotted the combat for the entire second game.

the Etrian Odyssey effects tend to do an okay to great job with status effects, depending on the game.

You can do some truly silly things with status effects in Cold Steel if you want.

The change in the orbment system includes the fact that you can now add a status effect quartz for each line, so you can stack someone like Machias with like Petrify, Confuse, Seal, and Freeze and then on top of that, use AoE crafts that have decent status effect chances on top of that.

It's like the idea of giving Tita a status effect quartz and using Smoke Cannon to style over battles but turned up to the absurd.

Like I said, the only thing that keeps it in the background is you can do far more silly stuff in Cold Steel like spam AT Delay or S-Crafts or Zero Arts.

I always had a Petrify on Estelle because there was a decent chance that you'd petrify at least one enemy with a Hurricane.

I never actually cast them, but they were good as added effects to a weapon in Trails.

Nah, I approach all mysteries the same way, whether it's Ace Attorney, Umineko, Sherlock Holmes, or what have you. I just go along for the ride and enjoy all the twists and turns as they happen.

The fight against Sae's Shadow was pretty tough. I actually got a game over the first time because I couldn't finish her off fast enough at the end, but I got lucky the second time because Joker dodged it. The Roulette gimmick was kinda neat though!

So we've come full circle to where we started the game. I'm still very confused as to how we ended up back in the real world, or are we still in the Metaverse? I'm also very confused about why things played out differently after defeating Sae's Shadow compared to all the previous ones. I guess I'll find out very soon!

Huh, so it seems like Joker's recollection of the events was imperfect because of the truth serum or whatever. So those strange flashes from time to time were other memories trying to bubble to the surface but failing. We got a quick flash to Morgana mentioning the conversation about pancakes, as well as another one about a special interrogation room. It seems like Morgana and Futaba were able to figure out that Akechi intended to sell them out before the operation began. This stuff didn't happen during the game before this. So wait, was Joker getting captured actually part of the plan? Whoaaaaaaaa.

And in the process, I've managed to max out Sae's Confidant thing! Sae has awakened to True Justice (Description: ?????????????????????????????)! I somehow leveled up Akechi's right before he shot me though! It's also confirmed that Akechi is working with Howie Mandel, and it appears they're ready to toss the SIU Director dude onto the garbage heap, too. FOXDIE?! I was kinda looking forward to giving this guy his comeuppance myself, so that's kinda anticlimactic. Oh well. It's also strange that they'd make a detective one of the main bad guys again.

"It would seem as though you have been killed." Not a line I expected to wake up to in the Velvet Room. So wait, we tricked Akechi into killing a cognitive version of Joker instead? Oh, I see what happened, I think. When Sae showed him the phone, there was a quick flash, so I guess Akechi went into the Metaverse without realizing it. How would he have gotten out without realizing it though? I dunno. Everyone trying to explain this to Sojiro is hilarious though. Ah, so the reason the Palace didn't collapse was because they didn't steal the Treasure at all. Ha, looks like they used Howie Mandel's conspiracy against him by knowing they wouldn't bother with a real autopsy and would just call it a suicide to cover things up. Nice. Sojiro finally spills his connection with Shido and his suspicions about how he was behind what happened to Futaba's mother.

I'm kinda curious what will happen now considering Joker has to pretend to be dead for a while. We've got until the middle of December to deal with Shido. Surely he's not going to be the last boss, right? Is there not going to be some supernatural mastermind who's behind the human big bad? That's usually how it works here, right? This can't be the final dungeon already. I mean, I guess it could since this is around when P4 vanilla ended, but I figured they'd be building on all of Golden's bonus content here. Plus, a lot of my auto-level Confidants are almost maxed out, so that's a possible sign we're almost done with most of the main story.

Anyway, that's enough for tonight. More tomorrow.

Re: What actually happened: Yeah, I think the real twist the game goes for isn't "who is the traitor" because Akechi is too obvious, but instead that the team realized it ahead of time and planned around it. Yeah, the scenes that have the weird effects that cut out (where you can briefly see speech bubbles and the like as it fades out) are meant to reflect that the drugs Joker was given are messing with his recollection.

IIRC, they got Akechi out the same way they got him in, Futaba could trigger it remotely. As for him not noticing either case... yeah. I'm not totally thrilled about the explanation and details involved with the whole plan. Still have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I think you passed this point, but if not, there's a point where Joker, Morgana, and Futaba are all chilling in Joker's room (Sojiro might be there too) and you're supposed to go to sleep to advance. You can talk to Futaba a couple of times though and each time she gives an increasingly more detailed explanation of various points of the plan. So it might help to check that out.

Not what happened, but because I'm still more fond of my own theory I was working on while I played over what actually happened: I still like my theory better even though it was shot down there. It sounds kinda similar to some comments you made in the lead-up here about wondering if Joker was being interrogated in the Palace. I had been increasingly convincing myself over the course of the game that Interrogation Room Joker was in his own Palace and it was an attempt to change his own heart by whatever villain.Perhaps to give up the rest of the team, and doing so indicated his heart had been changed and thus bad end.

There was an extended conversation with the group I think around the time of either Makoto or Futaba's arc where they have a lengthy discussion on whether or not you could recreate an entire city as a cognition and I thought it was going to be foreshadowing that the city you were playing in was just that. And that various stylistic choices of the game were in fact other foreshadowing details, like the masses being faceless except for the characters Joker personally interacts with because they're all his cognitions and unless he interacted with them he just didn't know/care about them enough to get any more detail.

The one thing that would have contradicted it was the whole, "Persona users don't have their own Palaces", but that could have just been a lie fed to Joker or something, I dunno.

Well, "Persona users can't have a Palace" would be consistent with the rest of the series. Your Persona is your Shadow you've gotten under control, so Joker couldn't have a Shadow self and couldn't have a Palace.
