All right, got two letters of recommendation in Shido's Palace so far. I like how it cuts to him talking to that person in reality after you beat their Shadow forms. That's a neat touch.

what's not a neat touch is having to navigate that convoluted set of hallways while having to mess around with the device that transforms you into mice for some reason

Finished listening to "And Then There Were None" at work today. Wow, I knew Umineko was heavily influenced by this book, but I had no idea how much until now! I was actually able to figure out a couple of tricks due to the fact that I've read Umineko! Very enjoyable book, good cast of characters, plenty of drama and tension throughout.

Man, I've pretty much been giddy ever since the new .hack//G.U. Last Recode news came out a few days ago.

this is to me almost what a xenogears remake would likely be for jeff (but not quite because i think jeff's love for xenogears is some "you can't grasp the true form" stuff) but then imagine they announce they're adding in perfect works material.

I'm not sure I can think of an equivalent for you, Leon. I'd say FFVIII remaster but I don't think that quite captures how out-of-left-field this announcement was. >_>

They resurrect .hack from the dead. Correctly pick G.U. to be the one to go with. Later announce a brand new Vol 4 to be added to it. Then say they're adding content for, among others, one of my favorite playable characters.

My one worry was "Well, maybe this slows down the localization since they actually have new stuff to work with" but there were a bunch of new photos released and it included new content in English already.

It's probably the equivalent of what the Ace Attorney 5 announcement was for me, although perhaps not quite to that extent since it's not that the series was really "dead," per se, but it kinda felt like it. Many people thought AJ had killed the main series, and then you had the whole fiasco with AAI2 never getting an official localization.

Or maybe the FFVII Remake announcement since nobody actually believed that would ever happen.

All right, made my way to the end of Shido's Palace! Watching Akechi slowly realize what's going on over the course of it was pretty cool, too. Then Akechi went full Adachi and transformed into Kain Highwind. The fight wasn't very hard, but the atmosphere was solid and Robbie Daymond has proven to be a really good VA with Akechi (and Prompto, too). I certainly was not expecting that to be the way his character arc went! I imagine that wound up being divisive for a lot of people, but I think I enjoyed it.

I think I'll finish this Palace off on December 14, my dad's last birthday.

Akechi's VA killed it in that scene. I liked the sequence, but I wish his story was a bit more spread out. Though I get it might have been hard to make it work out with the betrayal.

So yeah, I'm actually ok with Akechi being a popular Confidant. But not #1

And down goes Shido! I think those extra six levels made a big difference because he wasn't too tough. I've also discovered that the ideal team for bosses is Joker/Makoto/Ryuji/Yusuke because they've got all the team buffs covered, and I can usually assign debuffing to Joker.

Shido's real world reaction to the whole thing was pretty great, too. Ryuji has his moment in the sun, but because this is Persona, he somehow ends up getting knocked unconscious by all the girls afterward. Nothing good ever happens to us!

This feels like Persona 4 after you beat Adachi where it seems like there's resolution to the main plot, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions, so I can't imagine there's nothing else remaining on the slate. I guess I'll have to wait until after the deadline to find out! Igor insists there's nothing standing in the way of my rehabilitation, but I notice his Confidant didn't max out, so I'm not convinced...! At the very least, we've still got to get to the bottom of Mementos.

Definitely not the best boss theme in the series. That's still The Fog.

But it was pretty good.

The Almighty might be #4? Honestly I don't think I really care about any of the others besides those three though. Unless maybe P3 The Answer or P3 Portable have good boss themes that are different? Not super familiar with those soundtracks.

Boss themes aren't really the strong suit of Persona music imo.

Yeah I actually knew two of those already. Wiping All Out is a top tier song in the series, but I knew it was the normal battle theme and not a boss theme. Heartful Cry...I actually didn't realize was a boss theme. I definitely like that one but wouldn't say it's super amazing or anything? Easily #4 on my list though, maybe #3. Danger Zone I didn't know until now, but I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of it.

I listened to Rivers in the Desert before I got to it in-game and thought it was nothing special. Then I liked it a lot after I did get to it in-game. Neat song, but I think Battle for Everyone's Souls is still the best for climactic final boss music.

Augh, Sunday's episode of Thrones leaked. Now I've gotta be net-cautious on my day off!

Exalted Plains might be bottom 2 for Inquisition zones. (Worst is always Forbidden Oasis.) The majority of the Act 2 regions are better than the majority of Act 1's -- more focused, a bit more plot, and even some genuine integration into the critical path with Crestwood and The Western Frontier -- but man, Exalted Plains. The game is generally gorgeous on its open world but the color palette here is so bright my Inquisitor darn near glows. It's unfortunate because the Dalish camp is out here and I always roll Dalish in this one!

The music sucks here too. It's just a constant drone. Literally. Like I guess they're going for haunted undead atmosphere but Fallow Mire had that covered in spades. Undead in a gloomy, rainy swamp >>> undead on plains as bright as Florida on my birthday.

Oh well. At least the Reaper sound effect on the war horns is cute.

Persona 5 Spoilers to where Leon is (bold is so you don't confuse this for the vgm stuff): Yeah, Shido's Palace for me was split into the Good (Cuts to the real world as you started having effects, Akechi, Senator Armstrong, Rivers in the Desert) and Bad (too long, too many mouse gimmicks.) Akechi secretly the second best party member behind Makoto. Also wish they further explored the idea that another Wild Card was out there, but oh well, Akechi's end was pretty rushed IMO. Shido's battle was fun too, even if it had like 5 phases. He totally goes Metal Gear Rising at the end of it.

Oh woops I completely forgot about the last battle version of Burn My Dread. Probably for the better actually, since I just listened to it and I liked it a lot less than the normal version.

Also you you may have intentionally done this, but the P5 final battle theme isn't there, which was...pretty good I guess?

I did do that intentionally, yes. It's probably either below Genesis or above Reach Out to the Truth.

I also intentionally left out the very tail end of the P4 final fight because it's more generally used as a non-battle theme. Definitely not because I couldn't recall its name and had a feeling the name on the Limited OST that came with the game was wrong. That would be absurd.

Anything else would be an oversight I think.

Finally finished Trails of Zero. A pretty cool game. Definitely at least better than Sky 1 and 3. The tighter focus of everything is pretty great, though it does result in a bit of repetition (I assume the Trails games are repetitive partially due to their low budgets...). Party composition is way neater here than in Sky. Having small parties results in much better group dynamics and development. OST was solid, but I think Azure's is vastly superior in general...probably 3rd's too.
