The books are a lot worse.

Not really, they turned several consensual sex scenes from the books into rape scenes in the show and added at least one with a major character that didn't exist at all in the books

So I'd actually say the show is a lot worse

Other than the one with the major character (which I thought was so dumb, made me want to stop watching the show), I don't recall others that they added.

The rapes described in the books are super graphic

I've never read the books but I did read an article that explained how much worse the book is than the show especially with that guy that everyone hated who had his dogs hunt people. Apparently he was somehow even worse in the books

Ramsay isn't shit in the books, he's not this hot badass warrior that the show turned him into, he doesn't rape Sansa or kill Rickon or (for now) kill Roose

Isn't that munchausen syndrome? Probably spelled that wrong. But it isn't unheard of psychologically speaking for women to fall for their captors. It's a subconscious defense mechanism or something like that.

GoT is pretty brutal in general. It doesn't stand out to me as particularly rapey when I look at the totality of the violence and trauma inflicted upon the characters. There's a lot more straight-up mutilation than anything else.

Th gender balance (of people in power) also swings towards the women in later seasons. GoT isn't Femenism incarnate, but they do literally burn the patriarchy alive in Season 6.

@REMercsChamp i know you are just fucking around and I appreciate that, but tbh i kind of agree with you on this one. there is way too much rape/sexual violence shit, and what makes it even weirder is that there is never really any payoff for it.

like for example in a movie you might have a woman get raped and that is her motivation to get revenge or something like that. but in GoT you dont really get any payoff for the sexual violence, so you have to wonder why it was written in so much in the show and not just implied or whatever. for example why did they have to show like 3+ seasons of theon greyjoy getting his dick cut off? we got the picture after the first or second torture scene lol

The showrunners didn't intend for the scene to be that way. But if you want to take it as the way it was portrayed, rather than the way it was written (as you should), dude had his daughter killed right in front of him and his trip to Dorne was a failure.

What's bad about the rape in Game of Thrones imo is that they just add a lot of scenes like that for cheap shock value. There's no purpose to a lot of those scenes other than to shock the viewer. Heck, some of them don't even make sense to the characters, Jaime and Cersei specifically. I already know that it's based on 15th century England, I know things are shit, I don't need a rape scene every now and then to get reminded. As far as I can recall, there's not a single rape scene in the books that gets major attention, and if I forgot one then I'll bet it was more useful for the plot than just "get shocked".

I dunno, it feels like as the show goes on the producers feel the need to keep the shock value up, after the legacy of stuff like Red Wedding etc. And these types of scenes are a cheap way of trying to do that.
