how long has this been in the works for?

It's been in the works for a couple years now. Suidobashi Heavy Industry (Japan) claimed that they made the first ever giant fighting robot, named "Kuratas", back in 2012, and MegaBots Inc. (USA) started development of their first prototype in 2014. MegaBots sent the challenge to Suidobashi in June of 2015, and they've been fine-tuning their bots since. Like I mentioned in the first post, Kuratas vs. Eagle Prime is scheduled to take place later this year.

Also worth noting, a robotics company in China called GREATMETAL revealed a fighting robot of their own earlier this year. They've issued a challenge to face Eagle Prime with their "Monkey King" robot in the future, after the Kuratas fight.
