They don't "get extra breaks". They "take extra breaks and nobody reports them." It's not like the company is rewarding them, they're just abusing the lack of oversight and hoping nobody catches or reports them.

when i used to work at a grocery store we were only allowed to smoke on break and smokers were just like everyone else with respect to the # of breaks / shift

I literally had this exact same thought when I left for lunch today after seeing the pack-a-day guy toking in his car.

This dude takes WAY more than 5 a day though, I know that for a fact.

It's pretty fucked. I'd consider getting an e-cig with nicotine-free juice if it meant I could go dick around outside 5 times a day.

Most places don't give extra smoke breaks. It was either instead of peeing, if your job had pee breaks, or during your actual break. I've never seen a place just randomly let people go out and smoke.

Really only seen people complain about this on the internet. Probably from people that don't even have jobs.

Nobody gets extra breaks. If it bothers you take your own 5 minute breaks or report. If you're at a place where people are smoking every hour it usually means management doesn't give a shit though.

I used to go outside with the smokers all the time when I had jobs where people actually smoked.

In my office literally no one smokes.

You know, after thinking about this, I can think of a (hypothetical) system I'd try and establish:

So first, I'd make it clear that I'm a smoker. I'd be outside several times for 5 minutes every day. It's been established that I smoke. This is all under the assumption that management doesn't care about smoke breaks (which they don't at my office, at least).

Next, I'd make it clear that I smoke a pack a day. So I could easily get away with going outside 6 times a day for 5 minutes each. That totals up to half an hour.

Final step: Stop smoking and leave work half an hour early every day. After all, it doesn't matter, right? If I can spend 30 minutes punctuated throughout the day doing nothing, then why can't I leave half an hour early every day? Management: "your logic is flawless"
