I loved everything about that game except for the character designs. The lore, storytelling(especially the little excerpts they have about what happened in the past), voice acting, gameplay, etc... Couldn't get better except for making the characters not so ugly.

Anything on the market that's like it?

The maker of Lost Odyssey made Final Fantasy 1-7. I felt like Lost Odyssey was a great transition to final fantasy series. It really feels like the first game, but the first game is really grindy.

FFX is probably the most similar thing to it overall, honestly. But yeah, definitely check out the older Final Fantasy games. My personal favourite JRPG is Lunar: Silver Star Harmony (it's a PSP remake - they made it less hardcore and better looking, so the experience was nicer. You can buy it digitally for Vita as well). The original and PS1/GBA/iOS ports are still fun though.

I was fine with the voice acting, though Cooke's and Mac's voices were somewhat irritating. Jansen was great, and the others were alright. Nothing to write home about.

With that said, to answer the original question, Lost Odyssey was a relatively traditional JRPG, though an incredibly polished one at that. Single digit Final Fantasy games could fit the bill, as others have mentioned. The Dragon Quest games are generally touted as some of the best traditional JRPGs out there, so you may want to look at those too. I used to love the genre and could list off many JRPGs for the PS1 and PS2, but that could take forever. What console would you prefer to play? Maybe that'd narrow it down some.

Also, I have to admit, I can't think of any other game that offers anything similar to the Thousand Years of Dreams sequences. Those were written by Kiyoshi Shigematsu, one of the most popular contemporary Japanese writers, and I understand why you enjoyed them so much (they were fantastic). I've never seen another game try anything similar.
