Some comments I've read seem to suggest people are mistakenly thinking the protestors who came for the alt-right rally were citizens of the city, instead of out-of-towners coming to stir the pot.

You can in fact see a gelato restaurant in the video of the Dodge Challenger backing up after ramming into the crowd, killing Heather Heyer.

Yes, but some are under the impression that the two groups were both from Charlottesville.

UVA explicitly denounced the rally. A snippet from a message sent out today:

We will move forward from the images and terror of this past weekend, but we will not forget what white supremacist groups, motivated by hatred, tried to inflict on our University and larger Charlottesville community last Friday and Saturday. We need to talk openly and honestly, both inside and outside the classroom, about our individual and collective responsibility to address hatred toward individuals because of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, political affiliation, or other personal attributes. To our great regret, bigotry is not a relic of the distant past in our own community. Working together, we must address these issues and ensure that every member of this community feels welcomed, included, and free from fear. Each of you earned your place here. No one should face the added burden of feeling threatened, marginalized, or unwelcome.

Given the size of Charlottesville, it's pretty clear that most of the people involved on BOTH sides weren't from the town itself but either from surrounding towns or out of state. Which isn't uncommon since most high profile protests lately have been like that.

The counter-protestors were also bussed in... Very well-known, considering the Facebook accounts for some of them.
