Replaying the game. He is cheery, upbeat, positive and confident. Girls love him, and he actually shows interest in females. He actually has a personality unlike some of the other ff protags.

Is it bad that I don't remember a single thing he does in the game? He's just so... subpar.

He's not funny like Zidane. He's not super fucked up like Cloud, or inwardly stressed like Squall. And he's not totally jaded and aware of it like Lightning. He's just... Tidus. There's not that much to him.

Bad voice acting.

With a different VA, or at the very least a less high-pitched performance, and without the awkward stiltedness that stems from VAs trying to (poorly) match their dialogue to the lip movements of the characters (with Tidus and Yuna being the absolutely A-number-1 worst at it over the span of the game), people probably would have tolerated him way more than they do.

There's also always the possibility that he suffers a bit from having too many personality traits that the Japanese find appealing but Western audiences tend to be a bit more lukewarm about (see also where 90% of hate for Squall in FFVIII comes from), but I definitely think the voice problems play a much stronger role in making him less likeable.

Side tracking a little bit, but isn't crazy that the fmv graphics aren't even as good as the in game graphics of today? When I first so those ffx fmvs, they looked so real to me.

Tidus actually got ranked in a worse video game characters outfits before. though that list also included cammy from SF stating it looked like she had mold on her legs -_- when its clearly supposed to be camo paint.

but Tidus is by far the worst dressed FF characters. hes wearing a girls jacket and overalls with differing leg lengths. its like he stole some random clothes out of a donation bin and rolled with it.

why does vaan get all the hate when the majority of the party in that game is just as bland, balthier was the only one with an actual personality. still love the game though. just ignore that hes the MC, pretend the story is just being told from his point of view and it makes things a lot better

hes got more reason than balthier, fran, and penelo. balthier starts to care about the going ons of the world as the story advances, but in the beginning he has zero reason to stick around, vaan hates the empire from the start, penelo is just there because vaan is. its her only damn reason. pretty same with fran but with balthier. shes only there because he is.

had I been balthier I woulda ditched everyone after tomb of raithwall. as they baited him that far into with offers of reward. but after that, nothing.

Because while half of the other characters are either bland or slightly irritating, Vaan is a sucking vortex of feces who is pushed center stage on a regular basis, leaving you constantly thinking about how much better the game would be if the Japanese didn't have such a massive sexual fetish for ineffectual teenage pretty-boy protagonists.

Though personally, I reserve most of my loathing for Larsa anyway. Oh, and for the boring setting, terrible plot, and ploddingly dull game mechanics.

Oh, and the piss-poor audio quality that makes like half the characters sound like they've got lisps.

You can't really ignore the fact that he's the main character when he's always center-stage in the plot and everything that happens is presented from his point of view.

The narrative is actually structured in a way where either Ashe or Basch should be the main character, and most of the Western audience clearly believes that Han Balthier should be the real focus, but none of that really changes the fact that everything is pretty clearly centered on Vaan.

He's like the chocolate topping on an ice-cream sundae, except the chocolate is actually liquid shit. And while the ice cream itself might still be quite delicious, it doesn't change the fact that it's all going to taste like shit to you if you try and eat it.

(Except in FFXII's case, the problem is that the ice cream isn't even delicious, because it's mostly just bland tapioca pudding.)

I actually agree with the basch or ashe being main character part. but I don't see how vaan is pushed center stage most of the game. most of the cutscenes seem to revolve around the other characters penelo excluded. as I said its more like the story is just told from his point of view. hes kind of like serrah in 13, hes simply the reason the rest of the party came together in the first place.

edit: I personally found it to be a interesting change of pace for video games. the MC isn't actually the most important character

i'm still confused on that maybe someone else can clarify where they people that actually existed at one point or are the all from a dream world bahamut created. and I know the city existed in the real world, but doesn't mean his dream world didn't include it

yeah the overall story overshadows how cringey he could otherwise be. and I actually loved his story arc between him and jecht in dissidia. I almost cried when jecht as he faded away said "you did good kid"

Well, she was probably (outside of Nei in Phantasy Star II) the first major character in a popular RPG that 'died' midwat thru the game.

And since it been awhile since I've played FFX, I think SE was trying to make him to be kinda like Luke Skywalker in the 1st Star Wars film (ANH). Auron was 'Obi-Wan' (already in 'Force Ghost' mode) and Jecht was Anakin/Vader.

He came off a bit better in FFX-2.

To start, he just wasn't that interesting and I found it hard to relate to him.

I agree with others here who said that his voice acting was bad, which can totally change the perception of character. In fact, FFX was the first time (and not the last) I've ever said that I wish there were no voice actors.In a way, old school "having to read text" RPGs allowed for the player to give the characters their own personalities. Tidus just came off as annoying to me.

the dream was an imitation of the real city that became its own world. He wasn't based on anyone but looked similar to that one guy in x-2. Everybody in the city was born, etc, etc. They were just originally dreams.

I liked the VA, only issue I had with the VA is made it so I couldn't re name the characters. I don't do that anymore but back then I always did.

wonder what was more popular phantasy star 2 or Final Fantasy 5. as you forget a party member dies in that game too. still need to beat phantasy star 2, one of several rpgs I got to the very end and got burnt out.

edit: it would probably be more accurate to say her death was the first major video game character death a lof the players experienced as that game was a lot of peoples first jrpg outside pokemon. also I wouldn't be surprised by a star wars connection, 4 did it with cecil and golbez.

James Arnold Taylor is a great actor. As is John DiMaggio, and Tara Strong is good as well. I think the reason they seemed less expressive than usual was because they were trying to match the Japanese dialog too much.

To answer the TC's question: I didn't outright HATE him, but he was definitely my least favorite character in the game, and one of my least favorite FF protagonists.

he was essentially a scared teenager coping with the frightening new world he found himself in by latching onto the first cause he stumbled upon, always keeping up a facade of goofiness

yuna was the central plot character of ffx, but tidus' perspective made it feel a lot more personal

He's probably one of my least favorite FF characters. He's just so obnoxious, abrasive, and ignorant.

Hey Tidus, don't tell anyone you touched Sin. "Hey everybody! I touched Sin! Did you hear me? I TOUCHED SIN!!!"

Don't tell anyone you're from Zanarakand, ok? "I'm the star player of the Zanarkand Abes! Y'know, from Zanarkand."

Only the summoner and guardians are allowed in the Trial. *goes in anyway*
Stay away from the Summoner! *immediately breaks all rules and customs just to get to the Summoner*

He forgets literally everything he's told within seconds of hearing it, willingly goes against what everyone is telling him, is completely ignorant of the world around him and unwilling to change until it becomes personal to him. The on,y real character trait he has is being a loud mouthed braggart, until you're almost to Zanarkand and he finally figures out what's going on, despite it being made very obvious.

Also, the voice acting was annoying.
