Went to Field of Screams

One of the biggest horror themed attractions in PA

I'm going with someone who got in as press so we're both considered VIP. We get to go to the front of all the lines and go in the special press area which has tons of fancy food and desserts and stuff. And everything's free

This is so fucking cool.

Man I really didn't know how I'd be able to handle horror attractions. Like I LOVE horror movies, but I'm a total wimp when it comes to things like horror games. tbh I don't think I would've been able to handle going there alone. In my mind I knew everyone was just an actor but the setup of everything is really impressive.

We didn't get to do every attraction, just the Nocturnal Wasteland and Frightmare Asylum (which are the two I wanted to do the most anyway). Wasteland was the scarier of the two, maybe because it's the one we did first, but moreso because it's so open. With the Asylum it's easier to tell when something's going to jump out because there are limited places for them to do so, but with the Wasteland things can come out of any direction at any time.

However, in the Asylum, there was one particular moment that freaked me out. There was a little girl (no older than like 14; I'm always surprised by how young the cast is for some of it) sitting on the floor in the corner of one of the rooms. I didn't see her when we were passing by, so she grabbed my ankle as I was leaving the room and I almost screamed.

Then beyond the attractions there's also games and live music (they played more Ramones than I was expecting) and so much food. Really just a great time overall.

I didn't get much in the way of pictures because it was pretty crowded and I didn't want to be that guy (plus cameras aren't allowed in any attractions)

That place looks/sounds amazing, though. Kind of glad it isn't near me so I don't have to try to psych myself up to go, haha.

They're supposed to touch you. That's part of the big appeal, they'll jump out and grab you and get in your face and sometimes prod you with chainsaws (without the saw part)

Really? I actually found this one to be scarier than the miniseries

Honestly a lot of horror movies that seem to scare other people never really scared me (Nightmare on Elm St and Exorcist especially) but something about this one was just really intense

In particular, the projector and the woman from the painting

I just found it a little too reliant on jump scares, things were a lot creepier when Skarsgard was just doing his performance, like the initial sewer grate scene, that was so perfect, which is also why I love Curry as Pennywise. He's basically just a clown doing his schtick while it builds up to a dark and terrifying conclusion.

Just being a normal clown scares me enough is what I'm saying!

I still loved this new IT, it just didn't scare me enough.

finally watched Rings (the feature-length one). I share the same opinion of others who said it wasn't that bad. actually a lot of it had potential, and it feels like if they had put in a little more effort at certain points, it would have been decent. For example

*****MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW*****

the ending could have been this cool, terrible Samara transformation, like how the Well scene at the end of the original is the horrible coda that blindsides you after the fake happy ending. Doing that quick flash of Samara in the mirror then straight to credits was pretty lame I thought. If it was an actual slow take over of Julia's body, and maybe Holt walks in on her as she goes full-Samara, that would have been pretty nuts.

In a sense it was kind of to the original what Force Awakens was to A New Hope - they copied a lot of the story structure, and even some of the shots/dialogue were copied verbatim. They go to the guy who turns out to be Samara's dad, in a way, hoping he can help, Julia returns later alone, he attacks her, dies & the boyfriend shows up. Literally exactly what happens in the first, with Samara's adoptive father.

Anyway, it was alright for a crappy, low-budget sequel. I read originally, several years ago that it was planned as a prequel, like Ringu 0, showing more of Samara's life with the Morgans before she was killed. That would have been way more interesting, although it'd be tough to replace the actress as everyone thinks of Daveigh Chase when they think of her.

This was surprisingly, an entertaining movie for me. I was actually close to not watching it but tried it anyway. Very glad I did. The near perfect genre balance in the film was a pleasant surprise too.

I kind of want to talk about Inside v. Little Nightmares (not sure who all has played them here beyond Snake, but I'll avoid spoilers)

Inside was probably my GOTY 2016. Just completely blew me away. Couldn't put it down.

Now I'm about halfway through Little Nightmares, and while it's good it's nowhere as good as Inside. However, the games are VERY similar (small, fragile child wondering through dark and mysterious mostly 2D environment with heavy horror themes and no dialogue and dynamic camera work).

So why does Little Nightmares not feel nearly as powerful as Inside? I can't quite place my finger on what sets them so far apart, but it's definitely there

I feel like a similar thing happened with Journey and Abzu, which were both very similar in the way they were presented aesthetically, but Journey became recognized as one of the best games of all time, while Abzu went almost completely under the radar.

I think Inside had stronger gameplay hooks. The mind-controlling drones aspect intrinsically tied into the story and is a huge part of both endings and any deeper reads into the player/character relationship. In Little Nightmares, you don't do much besides avoid monsters and find ways to get to the next area. There's nothing there gameplay wise that truly draws you into Six's world. Moving boxes and finding keys could be replaced by anything and have the same impact.

oh wow, yeah I hadn't really thought about that.

I remember in Inside the first time I used a mind-controlled guy to mind-control another and the music cue went along with it, it was like something just clicked for both me and the character. I haven't had any moments like that in Little Nightmares.

I think Inside also gets a few bonus points just for being a little tighter in its design, as opposed to Little Nightmares which is a little sloppier (there were quite a few times when I died in LN because it was hard to detect what I could/couldn't grab, or where exactly the footing was due to it being on a 3D plane instead of 2D, which never happened in Inside).

I'm in the hotel? chapter of Inside, and I'll give it credit for reminding me so much of Spirited Away. Not super into the forced Hunger aspect though. Six will go from perfectly fine to dying of hunger in like a second, but will pass by rooms stocked to the brim with food without bothering to eat.

Yeah, as it is, it just sort of comes on randomly at pre-determined moments

like it's still a really good game (just beat it, and really dug the ending) it just has some flaws that keep it from being like one of the must-play indies like Inside
