You wish you were capable of hearing ripping solos, complex song structures, and impossibly fast double bass drumming, but you have not sold your soul to Satan in order to appreciate such greatness.

I fully understand the talent behind it, but the meaning doesn't interest me. I'm more into punk rock, especially the 70's and 80's stuff. I always liked the sound of The Misfits, but the lyrics about horror, and death, and the undead and shit never appealed to me either, although Danzig is one of the most talented artists and vocalists ever.

That's entirely up to you. To me, that makes it lame. "I don't like the taste of beer but I want to drink alcohol" being similar to "I don't like harsh vocals but I want to listen to metal". It's all a part of the genre. Just soak it in and it grows on you. But you still have to find the good stuff.

There's also TONS of bands with historical subject matter and honestly any kind of subject matter you can think of. Satanism is almost entirely restricted to black metal. Nobody else actually does that shit. That's stereotypical "rock and roll is the devil's music!" shit and it's embarrassing anyone under the age of 70 would say that unironically.

It's also worth pointing out that 99.9% of the Satanic lyrics aren't written in the name of legitimate Satanism. In fact, practically none of the awful lyrical themes expressed in extreme metal are done seriously. You're a idiot if you think there's a glut of bands actually advocating rape and murder and satan.

There's an inherent performance aspect to it all - they're effectively playing villainous characters. That's it. Once they're off the stage, they're just normal people again. So any time lyrics are brought up as an argument against such music, it makes as much sense as saying "Christopher Lee was a bad person because he was the dark wizard Saruman." It's absurd.

I'm not a fan of bands where the lead singer does nothing but scream the lyrics. Call me old fashioned, but I believe that the lyrics should also be remember and able to be sung back.

Which I say that Iron Maiden is probably my fav band. Heavy metal with music about epic journeys and awesome shit.

Though I've heard Mastodon also has songs about epic journeys. I know people have also talked about Eagles of Death Metal, but all I've seen from them is songs about banging chicks.

What kind of playing constitutes nonsensical playing? Also, can you find some support for the notion that it applies to death metal, from say...a music critic/music scholar? Surely anything scholarly that's been written about death metal must have completely trashed genre, right?

Do you not understand the definition of nonsensical or something?

From Dictionary.com
1. (of words or language) having little or no meaning; making little or no sense:
The music isn't senseless by any means. It has purpose, logic, and meaning. The fact that you can't keep up with what's going on is a reflection on you, not the music.
2. (of behavior, conduct, actions, etc.) foolish, senseless, fatuous, or absurd:
See #1.
3. objectionable, impudent, insubordinate:
Irrelevant.
4. of trifling importance or of little or no use:
Only by any definition that would apply to all music ever.

Actual death metal lyrics are more like this. I'm not cherry-picking, this is very typical of the genre.

There is a mask
That covers up one's true intentions
Once removed, things become very clear
Analyze behavior patterns to see beneath
The person that is presented to you
Vulnerable through trust
Life is a twisted maze of obstacles
Presented by people with a secret face

What's on the outside
Is not always all that is real
Live by caution, what I feel
When things are reversed
People are shown for what they are
The truth is revealed
Banish the false
Pacifying moments with an acquired disguise to obtain
The things they want
By the anguish of someone else
Materialistic motives are fulfilled
Cherish the true
Vulnerable through trust
Life is a twisted maze of obstacles
Presented by people with a secret face

Death metal lyrics are admittedly only at their best when they play to their strength; talking about Satan/Anti-Christianity. Here's a better example...

Death He Lied!
To the most high, above all
They cower in his might
But now, in his nakedness and shame
He falls...
Fallen King... to endure
Ceaseless pain...world is dead
Mighty God..pulling down
The heavens divide, revealing a light
From out of the sky, their savior appears
The figure adorned in wonder and brilliance
Plummeting down, falling to earth
In horror they watch, it was all just a lie. As light turns to black, devours their hope... and faith.
Mighty God...pulling down
Casting down... everything high
And bringing you... towards earth
Cold darkness, swallows life
Heavens promise, stolen light
Now to suffer with their fallen Christ
Blood to dust, flesh to dirt
To the earth, they lie
Light of God, never seen
To the most high, from below
They cower in his might
But now in triumphant glory
Rejoice the fall of God
Towards Earth
Mighty God...pulling down
Casting down...everything high
And bringing you...towards earth
Mighty God...consume the light
Casting down...your pathetic Christ
And bringing them...towards Hell

I tend to enjoy heavy metal and doom, and even some technical stuff, but death and power metal tend to be a bit excessive and shallow. What's the point of singing about stuff if it doesn't really relate to anyone? What's the point if it's so cartoonish or grotesque as to enter cliched absurdity? What's the point of these hyper-technical solos if you drown out the excellence or emphasis in such overpowered dynamics? Even the lows in a song feel manufactured and predictable instead of delivering a deeper musical perspective for the listener. It feels like complexity at the expense of diversity and abrasiveness at the expense of sincerity.

It's like a movie that's nothing but action scenes. No character development, no themes, no archetypes, no progression, no pacing, and no dynamics. Bleh.

Real talk: Hearing the difference now isn’t the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is ‘lossy’. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA – it’s about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don’t want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange…well don’t get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.

As for lyrical themes, extreme metal usually isn't about a message. Lyrics provide aesthetics and atmosphere. They aim to do something completely different so I wouldn't call them "lacking".
