Not sure if circle-jerk is moddable in a topic title

Both shows have large "cult" followings that sing the praises (and then some) of their respective shows, and refuse to hear any criticisms.

Don't get me wrong, I love both shows. But I think people online (SEE: r/Community and r/RickAndMorty) have bad habits of just going absolutely crazy over their respective shows and trying to turn them into more than they actually are.

Which community (pun intended) is more obnoxious?

Steven Universe, as good as it is, has the most circlejerky fandom, but of the two shows you mentioned, Rick and Morty is worse.

Half the fandom are normal people, but the other half constantly talks about how "most people" can't understand the "complex" humor the show offers. It absolutely reeks r/iamverysmart

Community's following is the only reason it didn't get cancelled by the second season, and the primary reason Dan Harmon is still such a popular figure in the nerd and screenwriting communities.

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows, opposite of a "cult" show.

I understand why people like him. Harmontown really humanizes him, and he's good at writing unconventionally flawed characters we grow to love, along with his specific brand of humor, but yes, his fandom is SUPER curclejerky.

This. I'm a fan but community fell off pretty hard and even the fans stopped pushing it much.

I'd say firefly was probably the most crazy fanbase. It had some of my favorite episodes ever but also had a few bad episodes to. For a show with only a half season it's overall showing was across the board.

Yeah 4 was almost universally the lowest rated season, but it rebounded a fair bit in 5 and 6. Not as good as 1-3, but still much better than 4.

Rick and morty has a crazy fanbase but I just recently got into it and I see why. It's like a better Futurama for a crazier generation.

Can you really call Rick and Morty a "cult hit"?

The term tends to imply a more unkown, underground esque feel to a show/movie. Basically, as I understand it, it's saying that a particular show is not mainstream, is probably failing or has already failed, but still has a relitively large, and loyal fanbase, despite all that.

Rick and Morty doesn't seem to fit that criteria. I would consider it a popular, mainstream show.
