I pray every day that she decides to move. I love my mother, but living with her is very stressful because she's kind of a trainwreck. Just a friendly warning.

What's with Americans' fear of living with family?

The 1950s convinced everyone that the perfect family unit was the nuclear family, and years worth of Puritan work ethic convinced most of us that an inability to live on your own by age 20 is pretty much a sign of absolute failure as a functional human being.

The massive shit the economy's been taking over the last few decades and rising millennial attitudes are starting to shift that, though, at least partly because most people seem to be carrying massive debt loads and are generally unable or unwilling to take on even more to buy a house of their own (and/or are unwilling to put elderly parents into nursing homes or other forms of adult care). So a lot of people are being forced to revert back to the more traditional "extended family" model whether they want to or not, because it takes a lot of financial pressure off.

Not with them, but I live in their old place and they live right next door. I want out, but I'm kinda poor and my mom has decided that if I move she's coming too. So that kind of defeats the purpose of leaving anyway.

I recommend staying with your parents. If you are working and they don't make you pay or you don't pay much, then stay with them. You will be saving a lot of money. A lot. The only bad thing is the stigma of still living with your parents. But who cares what others think. If you have or get a girl that doesn't care as long as you're working or whatever, then it's all good.

Of course, you will want to move out eventually.

I'm 30, still live with my parents, and will probably inherit the house when they're gone. I don't really think it's a bad situation, just a different world we live in now. It's not as easy to make enough money to live on your own anymore. It's more of a matter of luck these days.

Generational housing is how things used to be, actually.

It's even affecting home design, helped quite a bit by McMansions being most of the way there already.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's luck but it's definitely much harder now to be successful if you aren't dealt the right cards. It's a nuch longer uphill climb now if you're starting out from square one and your family isn't well off. The standards for getting a decent job are much much higher than they were in the past

Well there's definitely a good deal of luck involved, because a lot of the time, no matter how much work you put into it, sometimes it can still be impossible to get a good enough job to support yourself. It's just a different world today, and there will continue to be less and less good jobs available going forward.
