23 y/ Camila Mendes has detailed her offensive casting she got from directors made about her ETHNICITY because they said she didn't look LATINA ENOUGH!!

Her parents are Brazilian and opened up about her break into Hollywood as she's the star of Veronica in the "Riverdale" tv series shot in Vancouver.

She said "I'm pretty new to Hollywood, but i'm already starting to see the issues in how some projects are cast. I often hear things like, you don't look latina enough, so how are you going ot tell me that i don't look Latina? For me, being an American Latina, means identifing with and being influenced both my American upbringing and my Latin heritage, and i have os much appreiciation for how those 2 cultures have created who i am. I'm a full blooded Brazilian, with an entire extended family of Brazilians, but iw was born and raised in the US. When i go to Brazil, i feel like an American and in the US, i always notice the traits that make me Brazlian".

She nutures her brazilian hertiage by speaking portuguese to her parents

She loves her part on Riverdale as it strays from stereotypes of latin families as it's a departure from unerprivileged, sleazy latino drug dealers that are seen in entertainment.

Camila said that they wanted her character to be ethnic but not a stereotype, just an American Latina.

All white race latinos are never casted as latinos. Alexis bledel, charlie and Martin sheen are sime examples. They akways get castes as regular white anglosaxons americans

She could pass for Hispanic, whether or not she is.

She looks Latina to me, but that's because I've been exposed to Latinas that look like her. She could easily pass for both Latina and white. It's not even a skin tone thing for me, it's more her facial features. Those can be found in both races.

Also if casting directors don't find her Latina enough, then so be it. I don't see it as a racial thing, although it could easily be seen a racial as one and I get it. It's just tv and film is a visual medium and they may need someone that looks "latina" enough in order to quickly convey to the general audience that the character is latina. Camilla knows she's Latina, the casting director knows she's Latina, but the general audience may no get that during the film (without being told).

I understand that Camila has heard this so many times and It's offensive to be told that u don't look the part when u live and breathe the part. And the casting staff could be more sensitive (while being honest) when rejecting Camila based on her ethnicity. But otherwise, it's just the nature of casting for the medium.
