Yeah; Mario's always pronounced his name "Mahr-yo" and it's been the Italian pronunciation since like forever. Truly perplexing how "Marry-o" became a thing in the first place.

I pronounce it Marry-o wrong. I'm surprised you knew I even pronounced it "wrong" and not "rong," like the w isn't silent, people =D

More seriously, the difference seems like an odd gamer thing. From experience, the more hardcare a gamer someone is, the more likely they'll pronounce it Mahr-yo, and the less someone is into video games, the more likely they'll pronounce it Marry-o.

I can guarantee you, I can ask my mom and she'll pronounce it right, despite probably not having played any games since my uncle owned a pong console.

Given that I knew a lot of Marios growing up -- including a black Mario (less relevant, I also knew a Dario but I think he might have pronounced it Darry-o) -- I've always pronounced it Mar-io or however you represent that.

And it's also worth noting that in the 80s/90s that was even how the tv show was pronouncing it:
