My editor apparently REALLY likes what I did with the material the main writer made, so he's hoping to get everything off the ground starting in December, with some preliminary art coming in the next few weeks.

I don't know!

Main writer mentioned something about possibly doing a kickstarter (don't worry, I'm not gonna post the link here), but I imagine the pay from royalties isn't gonna be extravagant. The guy has some royalties from two other comics (One is called Oblivious, which may or may not have been released yet. The other... I can't recall, other than it having to do with murdering people in their dreams at a specific hour)) but he still needs to work two jobs to support his family.

I'm not planning on using this to quit my job or anything. It's really just a stepping stone for me, since having a writing credit for something that actually got published and sold would look SUPER good.

I definitely don't expect it to be, say, the next Scott Pilgrim or anything

Btw, the series I'm working on is called Mercy (hasn't been released yet, obviously) but it's a Supernatural Horror/Slice of Life story. I must've done a really good job with the pacing and everything because main writer physically told me that he was glad I helped him out, because he felt his own characters were sorta bland before I came in, and I made them shine a little more.

Dashes of comedy go a long way for making people likable, I guess.

Just figured I’d weigh in here: I’m a comic artist myself and I write the series’ I work on.

For indie pubs your pay is almost always royalty based. And it’s not much out the gate. Don’t expect to get rich anytime soon.

That said, if you sign to a good pub, they’ll get your book distributed by Diamond and you’ll at least have a shot at making money. Monthlies never sell as well as trades by the way, so you won’t start making decent money till you create enough singles to fill a trade.

There’s a piss ton of indie pubs out there, but be careful who you sign to. On a personal note, my new series is going to Markosia. Generally you want to lean towards the bigger guys like them.

I’m impressed. It took me ten years to break into the industry (I first submitted to pubs at 17 and didn’t get picked up till I was 27).

What book will you be writing for?

Edit: if you signed an NDA and cant discuss it, no worries.

I actually haven't signed anything. And I talked about it a little earlier.

It's a supernatural horror/slice of life called Mercy. It's a new property, so nothing is written in blood or anything yet

I actually try to write 1000 words every day. Haven't been doing it at all for the last few weeks since I got my job, but I'm gonna start bringing my laptop so I can write during lunch

Yeah, I honestly hope the stuff I write will inspire and entertain others just as Bryan Lee O'Malley, RCG (main guys from Always Sunny), and Dan Harmon have inspired and entertained me.
