Was it fair to suspend Jackson?

Parents of a 5 y/o Kindergarten Kid are OUTRAGED after he was SUSPENDED for stating he had a BOMB in his backpack!!

The school suspended him for making "terroristic" threats after he claimed to be carrying a bomb as Jackson Riley, a kindergartner at Great Valley Academy in California told his teacher he couldn't take his backpack off cause of that "bomb".

After his teacher looked inside and found nothing, the boy was suspended from the lesson for one day.

The school sent a letter home stating he violated a school code when he "intentionally engaged in harassment, threats or intimidation".

But Parents, Ian and MIchelle complained that the rule only applied to students in grade 4-12.

Ian is a local radio host who said "He's got an imagination. In his mind, he's being this hero that's preventing you from being exploded from an imaginary bomb in his backpack. We don't want terroist threats to be on his permanent record. This kid is 5. We think the administration acted far too harsh for a 5 y/o. We truly want to stress that our issue is with the admin and that we absolutely love and adore our children's teacher. She has been amazing with our son. My wife and i really, truly, honestly, sincerely, appreciate all the supportive message we have received today!! i mean that"

Do you think it was fair to suspend Jackson? let's see what people think

To all the yes votes, you've clearly never lived with a 5yo.
Their grasp of social etiquette is nonexistent at worst, burgeoning at best. They simply parrot the themes and moods of those around them, looking for meaning in and typically without any real concept of understanding the gravity of the issue they've inadvertently raised.
The teacher should have known better and used it as a lesson in things they shouldn't joke about/that aren't good topics for playing around with.

All I'm seeing is "he's 5!" like that grants him a free pass. Does that mean he can go on a mass murdering spree and that's ok because he's 5? Clearly not. Actions have consequences and kids, just as I did should learn that and not be taught they will get a free pass because of their age. It's really not a hard concept to grasp.

No, but he's not going on a mass murdering spree. That you feel the need to liken a five-year-old saying he has a bomb because he doesn't know any better to a five-year-old going on a mass murdering spree just shows that you have no leg to stand on. It seems like you're coming more from a place of bitterness than any rationality.

I mean, what are you going to argue next? Should a baby be charged with rape for trying to suckle the breast of a woman who didn't consent? I guess we should lock him up because he doesn't get a free pass for his age.

Consider that the difference between saying he has a bomb in his backpack and having a bomb in his backpack. And he's 5, meaning he doesn't have a real awareness of these things like somebody older would, which isn't a hard concept to grasp. The school reacted in entirely the wrong way.

to be honest I think it's idiotic to suspend a 5 year for anything. there is nothing a 5 year old can do that warrants suspension. and the suspension won't even mean anything to the kid. he barely knows what's going on in his life. He won't understand the punishment and it won't even feel like a punishment. he gets to watch sesame street instead of going to school.

I remember playing Cops and Robbers at that age, and all we really understood about prostitutes is that they were criminals, and that criminals was good enough for Cops and Robbers. So we'd have conversations like, "You were the prostitute last time! It's my turn to be the prostitute!" or "Billy did some things for money because he's a prostitute".

Today that shit would probably lead to a totally deadpan investigation into a child sex ring. One that some people would never truly believe wasn't going on.

No, not okay just because he's 5.

If anything it's even more important to set the record straight that this sort of behavior is not acceptable.

You can't potentially endanger the lives of dozens of other little kids and the teacher because the child doesn't understand what is appropriate and when it is an appropriate time to play make believe.

He learns that the school is being running by fucking idiots and to hate the administration because it'll overreact over anything. Or maybe he learns that he can get a free day off by making things up. Either way, it's not the lesson you want to teach and the punishment doesn't fit the non-crime.

No, he doesn't. Learning about consequences first entails knowing that something is wrong BEFORE being punished for it. There's no way that a 5 y/o has any conception when it comes to using his imagination like that. The only people in the wrong are the school faculty -- because at least THEY'RE old enough to know better -- and they most certainly should be punished, perhaps with an unpaid suspension or an outright firing.

I'm glad he got put out for a day.

Being 5 is old enough to understand not acting like a clown and obeying those who are your caretakers.

My little siblings knew not to try me at the same age. Acting like that in school and then the parents justifying it just shows their parenting skills and this kid will probably be a real little shit in the future.

Definitely worth keeping tabs on if I'm the school
