Everytime something comes up about YouTubers losing revenue I hear so many people saying good and they they deserve to lose their livelihoods and I can't understand this mentality, they provide a service people are willing to flock to en masse, why don't they deserve any compensation for their success?

I think the issue is many people don't understand the work that goes into making videos to put on youtube and are jealous at the thought of someone making easy money while they go off and work a "real" job.

Creative jobs tend to be undervalued by people who are unfamiliar with the amount of effort that goes into them.

I'm not, they're just paid through ad revenue.

What I find amusing is that they spend thousands on a workstation PC just for their own vids that often don't have special effects. Pretty cool way to make money.

All of this falls under fair use. Tons of people make money in other fields reacting to things and reviewing videogames/movies if millions of people watch them, who are you to say they don't deserve to be paid?

I think people don't understand how much money they actually make. The lazy, annoying people (side note, every youtuber people have complained are "annoying" are just regular people you see in the world everyday. I have no idea how you survive outside your house if your tolerance is that low) that most people complain about are probably getting pennies per day. People who put effort into their videos are the successful ones, and they can often barely get by. The very successful ones are very rare.

There's also a ton of behind the scenes stuff you have to do. Research, writing a script, and editing take a ton of time. Then there's all the advertising stuff, talking with fans, promoting videos, see what people like/dislike for future ideas, monitoring comments.

People seem to think the successful Youtubers just spend an hour or 2 and spit out a video, and then rake in the cash.

Because they see someone like PDP who's just a screaming "Theater Whore At Times" playing call of madden '97 and they assume all youtubers are like that. What they don't understand is every video can take twice as long if not longer to edit. If I make a hour long video and it takes 2 hours to edit (3 hours total), how am I supposed to produce content everyday and hold down a job?

They don't realize the audience isn't just watching someone play a game. They're entertaining us, HCBailly is giving us 100% walkthroughs for all the Final Fantasies, and GameGrumps' constant jokes leave us in stitches. Some of us like the look on somebody else's face when they see their favorite plot twist; ever look over at your friends during a movie? It's a way to relive games we already beat without getting through level 7 all over again cause that boss is a pain in the ass.

TLDR; Stand up comedians get paid a lot more for less work.

eg. "if you like this shit then subscribe and comment below"

also, the ads.... the fucking ads every time i load up a goddamn 1 minute video.

so yeah, if i had to choose between them getting paid and me getting a hassle free experience i say screw em.

Unsustainable bubble is unsustainable. Also all the whining about youtube withdrawing the money-teat is insufferable.

It's great and all that they were able to make a bunch of money while they could, but there's no inherent right or entitlement to get payed to stream video game gameplay. It's all at the grace and mercy of Google.

Yup. Also probably mad that they didn't get in early and become established before competition set in. Running a successful YT channel long term takes a lot of work, and a willingness to adapt to the audience/what works (which is why so many tend to go down the same path in terms of trends).

Yeah this makes me a rage too. People get mad whenever they try to make money but why can't content creation just be their job. The free market seems to indicate that people want to view the content, and often demand more, and when big content creators have day jobs it can be hard to put in the time. Why not pay them for the entertainment. I don't see the problem.
