If you didn't know Star Wars Battlefront II's skill and progression system is completely loot box based, so the game has essentially become pay to win despite already being a full priced game.

EA was formerly accused of selling 1/2 of a game with Star Wars Battlefront (2015) since the DLC which contained more maps was $50 (if you purchased the season pass) and one of the largest complaints about the base $60 game was there wasn't enough maps, so people were saying EA was trying to sell people a game for $110.00.

EA made a big show at E3 2017 about how there wouldn't be tons of expensive DLC you would have to buy for Star Wars Battlefront II and the DLC will be free this time, but this is apparently in exchange for the game being made pay to win instead.

Since Overwatch popularized loot boxes in AAA games as a means of continuous profit from a game, lots of publishers try to fit in loot boxes (that you can buy with real money of course) in any way they can, although they usually keep it restricted to cosmetic items.

I don't think Star Wars Battlefront II being pay to win is going to stop it from being a massive success, because of the fact that it's a Star Wars game, but the fear of pay to win loot boxes isn't restricted to Star Wars Battlefront II alone, the fear is that if (or more likely when) Star Wars Battlefront II is a massive sales success, EA will standardize pay to win loot boxes like Overwatch standardized cosmetic loot boxes, and every publisher will start putting pay to win loot boxes into their game because EA got away with it.

I played some of the beta yesterday. I was having a hard time in the space battles until I got a card that made my ship do 30% extra damage and I started destroying other ships who weren't lucky enough to get any good cards for their ships. So yeah, if you buy a bunch of loot boxes, you can get more opportunities to get good cards inside that you use to give your characters better stats and new abilities. I can't even imagine the shit show if they have lootboxes for sale with guaranteed rare drops.

That is terrible for online against other people. I would be fine with it if it was for single player or co-op PvE modes. But you can't be giving boosts like that in something like loot boxes.

But when it's done for cosmetics it's really completely optional to pay for them, well, assuming you can still earn loots boxes from playing the game. The system is completely fine for that.

The alternatives are to have set cosmetic items that cost real money or to not have any at all. This is for solely cosmetic items though.

Because it's still trying to get money from us. Like the Halloween event that's on now. If you want that cool limited time skin you either have to play a crap ton to grind boxes in that 2-3 week period or spend money on loot boxes. The event is over? Welp too bad, you can't get that skin anymore. And everything is random so if you only want 1 skin, you may not even get it.

Been playing overwatch for 10 months now and I can say overwatch does it right. They're a ton of ways to rank up to get loot boxes, which also drop in game currency.

I have a gold skin for all but one player (sombra), and I've bought 3 skins with in game currency. Sitting on 5k+ because honestly, most of the stuff i want drops in loot boxes

i've always been of the opinion that as long as i don't need them to progress in the game i don't care. and as long as the loot box content doesn't effect in game stuff i don't care. if there's special loot exclusive guns or power ups or whatever then i'd be annoyed/wouldn't buy it.

O....M...G....you need to put hours into a game to get loot box rewards?! How TERRIBLE!!!! Or you don't want to put the time in and you'd rather spend the money you made (unless you're icoyar) to just buy some loot boxes? How TERRIBLE!!!!!

In the case of Overwatch, they at least make it so you have a chance to get those items again.

OK, like I said before, the alternatives are either having each skin cost a certain amount of money or they'd put a small amount of skins in the game then wouldn't release any more.

If you want more skins, you're going to have to pay money for them or else the company isn't going to put more out there.
