Not what games you thought were better(because you might have preferred mario but parents got you a genesis or whatever), but which one you "repped" harder.

I figured I was a mario kid, but ive been watching lets plays of the genesis sonics and i connect with them more.

though now that I am in my 20s having replayed some of these games, mario> sonic, imo. at least from mario 3 onward.

mario. first game. loved all 3 the genesis and super mario world on the snes. never really played sonic 1 back when it released but I loved 2, 3 sonic and kunckles. but I always like mario more. sonic was more visually appealing with the better graphics, and had nicer music. and gameplay is a toss up for what i'm in the mood for, but mario came first so nostalgia takes it away I suppose.

I started gaming before Sonic was a thing, so... that's probably part of it. I also never thought the Sonic games were anywhere near as good. I mean, the whole thing is a speed-racing gimmick yet most of the time there are too many obstacles to make just charging through levels viable. *Granted* I'm sure that works on replays but, as an average gamer, I'm not that interested in playing a level hundreds of times just to memorize it well enough for speedruns.

I also realize I associate Mario with the color red, despite his blue overalls. Maybe it's because I think of Sonic as being blue.

Sonic. Which is hilarious, because I didn't own a single Sega console until four years after I became a hardcore Sonic fan, and I'd had an NES for a good eight years at that point, and an SNES for 4-5, along with a full set of Mario games for each.

many people associate mario with red. probably due to luigi having green.

and yeah my brother would just pause the game a lot playing sonic where as I opted for a slower approach as long as I didn't run out the timer.

Sonic. I had NES and Gameboy Pocket for Mario and that was it. I owned the Master System, Mega Drive and Mega CD for Sonic and played the Sonic games a lot more. Even to the day when I feel like retro gaming Sonic games are my go to.

Never heard of mario or sonic when I was a kid.
Nowadays I like the mario games and the world but not mario himself. And I like Sonic and Tails and the games, but not that world.

As for image, Nintendo was considered the A brand for kids with "power". Sega was considered the alternative brand, for kids that loved to fight.
I was neither of them I guess.

Sonic 1 is definetly way more difficult both because of the lack of spin dash and also because the levels were harder.

I remember being shocked at the increase of quality as I played 2, and then 3&K was mind blowing lol

I got lucky when it came to consoles basically a grandparent spoiling grandkids war. grandmother bought a nintendo but said it had to stay at her house. grandfather but us a nintendo we could have at home. she bought a sega once again had to stay at her house, grandfather bought us a sega to have at home. (they where divorced mind you) i'd i'm sure spoiling his grandkids was the major reason but i'd bet money that part of it was fueled out of just to piss her off.

Those of us of a certain age were (unless you were in the computer scene ala Commodore, Atari, MS-DOS) Mario kids first given what the industry was like after Atari exited (though not fully) and concentrated on computers for a few years in the mid-80s. When Mario came out, it really was a total mind blow.

However, when the Genesis was being pushed hard with the intro of Sonic, those of us of a certain age were now in our teens and the ad campaigns done by Sega during that time really made some of us dump Nintendo as the "kiddie" console. This happened to me. Hardcore Mario guy and defended him on the playground against my rich friend who had a Genesis off the bat (not to mention a NeoGeo). But once Mortal Kombat came out and the Genesis got the "good" version (i.e. BLOOD and FATALITIES), my brother and I pooled our birthday, Xmas, and other money to get a Genesis that came with Sonic 2, a rebate form for Sonic 1, and Mortal Kombat. And that turned me into a Sonic guy for the 90s.

Nowadays, I like them both equally.

As a kid, I liked Sonic more since he was more "cool" but gameplay-wise for their platformers, well, I do love Sonic 3, but I preferred Super Mario All-Stars and Yoshi's Island over Sonic 1 & 2. The Mario games generally had better platforming. But I do prefer the 3D Sonic games over Super Mario 64 (and I only played a demo version of Sunshine), which was part of my teenhood.

I still legit don't know how the fuck I got mario all stars. I just remember checking the mail as a kid and it was in the mail. my mother never once said shit about her having bought it. and back then I don't think she would have thought to order a game through the mail. come to think of it I never asked her either, I should do that. wondering if nintendo power had some promo to order it from the magazine or something cause we did have a sub to that.

Mario.

My first sonic game that I owned was sonic adventure on the dreamcast. I played sonic 3 at a friend's house. I eventually got a sega collection on the dreamcast that had sonic 1 and played and enjoyed it.

I've played mario since forever. Smb is the first game that I can remember playing. I've had all the nintendo consoles and handhelds (except the switch, which I'll get eventually).

Mario is just better imo. More fun. Sonic is cool too (when he's in a good game), but his games just don't compare to marios at all

When I was a kid, there were only Nintendo games and consoles where I live. It wasn't until mid 2002 that Playstation 2 arrived (I completely missed 1) and Gamecube finally had a competitor.

It's not that I dislike Mario or anything (I lean more towards Kirby anyway), I really had no choice between the two as you can imagine. I only knew about Sonic because of the cartoon. I tried hard to like it because my cousins loved it, but I couldn't get into it.
