They contain casein, a milk protein, that still came from cows. So because they didn't use actual milk, it's supposed to be considered vegetarian. Lol.

It contains an animal product. That's not vegetarian. It's just a weird, gimmicky cheese-like product.

The animal did not have to die for it, hence vegetarian.

Uh dude

Vegetarian cheeses can contain dairy

Vegetarian is the shorthand for ovo lacto vegetarian. Products can be labeled vegetarian when they contain dairy or eggs.

Unless it's a vegan cheese it can have casein and even rennet

Vegan cheese has neither

On the most basic level:

Vegetarians: do not consume animal products the animal had to die for.
Vegans: do not consume animal products at all.

(Vegans also pilot flying saucers to take over Earth, although I might be mixing up my Vegans now...)

Cheese is made using an enzyme that is most easily harvested from calf stomachs, which involves killing the calf to get it. Vegetarian cheese gets that enzyme from other sources, which means the cheese is made without needing to kill an animal.

Edit: Doing some more research (read: wikipedia), it looks like most of the enzyme used in cheesemaking these days comes from genetically modified yeast, because it's far easier and cheaper to get it that way than using calf stomachs. This means most cheeses are vegetarian now.

Omni eaters should be ashamed too, at least vegetarians do something to minimize.

Many people eat vegetarian for health reasons with animal welfare as a secondary or nonexistent factor. so what is the point to any of this beyond showing us you don't actually understand what vegetarian is which is kind of worrying for someone serving food for a living

I did not know that, but it doesn't change the fact that Sunny obviously doesn't know the difference between vegetarian and vegan. I have also never seen cheese explicitly labeled as "vegetarian." I wouldn't be surprised if the cheese he saw actually said "vegan" but he just read it as "vegetarian" because it looks similar and he's unaware that "vegan" is a term that exists

The problem begins with the fact that it was ever raised to be killed for meat to begin with. Stop breeding and killing the dang animals.

That's true for an individual serving, which is why people turning down meat that they're served is questionable (it either goes into your stomach or into the garbage, and the producers won't know the difference), but on a larger scale, providing less demand for meat means less meat will be produced. It's not a completely futile gesture.

It's really kind of pointless to have a nondairy cheese with casein. I've never seen it myself.

But it may be for people with lactose intolerance. Not vegan people.

What makes you think vegetarian cheese is terrible? Again, cheese being vegetarian just means the chymosin used to curdle the milk proteins is derived from a source other than animal stomachs, which in most cases (80-90% of cheesemaking, vegetarian or otherwise, if Wikipedia is to be believed) means it comes from yeast that's been genetically engineered to express the protein (similar to how most insulin is produced these days).

There is vegan cheese out there that doesn't contain any milk, and is instead some sort of tofu cream kind of thing, but that's another beast entirely, and is mostly just masquerading as cheese (can't say I've ever understood the fascination with pretending that vegan dishes are in any way emulations of the real thing, as opposed to just calling them their own thing, but meh).
