Why do they use bottlecaps as currency?

I get that irl it's to keep with the 50s theme but like what's the in universe explanation, like why not something that already has monetary value like silver and gold?

Because normal coins were probably used for their material.

Just a guess, but maybe it's just the cheapest possible material and design to be wide scale and easy to move without being too easy to forge.

Or maybe even that little metal is valuable, making every bit count.

To me the idea of someone carrying around a sack of thousands of bottle caps just seemed funny.

Ya'll know this is actually explained somewhere right <_<

There's a town in Fallout 1 called the Hub which has vast amounts of drinkable water. Because potable, unradiated water is precious in the wasteland, this water was used to back a currency the same way gold does for us. Bottlecaps were chosen to be that currency because the technology to make and paint them was mostly lost after the war.

Bottlecaps are currency, because apparently, a single cigarette can be used to make one bed.
