not having food means life or death too, so should we socialize farms, ranches and grocery stores?

i know you're trying to make this sound bad but it actually rules. yes, let's do all that

A better question might be: What *don't* you want owned or controlled by the state? Because you seem to be in favor of government owning everything, which is problematic for countless reasons. One of the biggest problems with collectivism is how quickly it stifles innovation.

its communism lite bro, and communism is bad mkay?

what you just described is socialism, not 'communism lite', whatever that is

Your controls go well into the realm of communism, though.

socialism is inherently "well into the realm of communism", but they're still separately definable concepts. haven't u ever read marx

(full disclosure: i believe we should be moving towards democratic socialism)

I feel like millenials' obsession with socialism and Marx specifically must be because it's unfamiliar and exotic. Soon, we can aspire to be a great socialist utopia like north korea! I'm sure North Koreans secretly find the idea of being able to open their businesses and control their own financial destiny fascinating...

"North Korea officially describes itself as a self-reliant, socialist state[17] and formally holds elections. Various media outlets have called it Stalinist,[26] particularly noting the elaborate cult of personality around Kim Il-sung and his family."

Sure, it's an ultimately pointless virtue-signal which gets them a ton of press and panders to a key demographic, thus making the real value PR/marketing.

Zeus, did you just respond to yourself?

Poor guys all turned around.

This made me laugh out loud.

Also, this is so accurate for proponents of Marxism. The truth is Marxism will always lead to a powerful state with powerless people under the guise of it being a people's state. But we've already had a few real life lab experiments to show what happens. The philosophy sounds so lovely and generous though that it's easy to label critics as monsters or reactionaries or what have you

so its impossible for you to find a new job or even start your own business? and you are OK with that? jesus, what a sad hopeless life that sounds like

My side job is actually my own business, but I don't get to set my wages there either - my customers do. I mean, I could raise my prices, at which point most of them would tell me to get bent and stop paying me, so my income is essentially fixed there too.

But so is literally everyone else's in the world, whether they acknowledge it or not, so it doesn't really bother me much.

Troll_Police_ posted...
oh, so you CAN decide how much you feel like your work is worth.

No, in that case other employers would decide how much they wanted to pay me. I can't just march into an office and say, "Excuse me, I feel my work is worth $10 million a year, so pony up."

Troll_Police_ posted...

and i have made it abundantly clear numerous times that i am all for privatizing all of these things with the notable exception of the military for reasons too long to get into again on here.

It is even funnier to me that you think that.

quite a victim complex you got there. no wonder you think your entire life is out of your control, and no wonder you think others must be the same.

No, in that case other employers would decide how much they wanted to pay me. I can't just march into an office and say, "Excuse me, I feel my work is worth $10 million a year, so pony up."

do you have no backbone? no ambition? you cant go into an interview and tell them the paygrade you think you deserve? if you legit think the work you do is worth 10 million a year then you are doing yourself a disservice by not going for it, which by the way you are free to do. thats how capitalism fucking works member?

and its funny to me that all you can say for an argument is how "its funny to me". its almost as though you cant actually argue, so you just try to devolve into half insults serving no purpose.

When did I say this? You're projecting, bro.

Troll_Police_ posted...
and no wonder you think others must be the same.

They are. That's simple economics.

No matter what you do in the world, your wages are controlled. They are controlled by what the market thinks they are worth, and that is true of government positions as well, which is why your position is so laughable. Yes, the government could step in and say "Doctors now only make $25,000 a year", and they would very quickly have no more doctors and be forced to increase wages to a more reasonable level. Doctors command the wages they do because their skillset is difficult to attain and highly in demand - that will remain true whether they charge patients directly or bill the government for their services.

Having universal healthcare is completely unrelated to what sort of money doctors make.

Troll_Police_ posted...
do you have no backbone? no ambition?

Because the only measures of those things are my paycheque?

Troll_Police_ posted...

Who says I haven't done that?

I make six figures a year. I don't care to get more specific than that, but it's more than enough to finance the sort of lifestyle I want for myself. I am content with what I earn and I earn fair wages for what I do.

Troll_Police_ posted...
if you legit think the work you do is worth 10 million a year then you are doing yourself a disservice by not going for it, which by the way you are free to do.

If anyone legit thinks the work they do is worth 10 million a year, they are completely delusional with a wildly overblown sense of their own importance.

Now, some people *can* make that kind of money, through celebrity, ingenuity, taking advantage of markets, or simple good fortune, and I don't begrudge them for doing it (I certainly would, if given the opportunity), but that's far from saying that their work is "worth" that kind of money.

And of course I'm free to walk into my boss's office and demand he pay me $10 million dollars a year; I'm also sane enough to note that there is not a person in the world who would pay those sorts of wages for the type of work I do.

Troll_Police_ posted...
thats how capitalism fucking works member?

That is not even close to how capitalism works.

Capitalism is about the market dictating your price, not you dictating your price. If you charge more than what the market can or will support, you will very quickly find yourself unemployed.
