Vader: Perhaps you are not as powerful as the Emperor thought?

LMAO, that fight sucked ass: https://youtu.be/U1MnMA0TzGI?t=55s

Argue that it's a good scene all you want, but there was hardly any fighting; mostly just a bunch of boring talking, so as a fight, it sucked. Not even close to one of the best fights in Star Wars.

The GOAT Star Wars fight is the Darth Maul one: https://youtu.be/U1MnMA0TzGI?t=55s

Honestly, I think it's disappointing in comparison to Empire Strikes Back.

My biggest problem with it is the turning point. Luke is hiding. Darth says he'll corrupt Leia. Luke comes out swinging and Darth Vader is entirely on the defensive after that. The least they could have done is had Luke block an attempted swing. How boring would it be if a Rocky movie had the opponent make a nasty comment about Adrian between rounds and Rocky just came out throwing the first and only punches in the final round?

They tried to be dramatic, but George Lucas has never been great at drama. He excels in the action-adventure department. It's a disappointing rematch to one of the best sword fights in film. The fact that he wins solely by going into rage mode pretty much spoils what could've been a great fight like the first one.

It's always been my one gripe about that film. The ewoks I don't have a problem with. The non-competitive ending to the swordfight I do.

I think it's safe to say that, in general, the series has had some serious balancing issues. The fight at the end of Episode II felt like it should have taken place at the beginning of a movie.

There's also the emotional tension overall given that Luke went into it knowing the truth of his father and Vader knowing this time he couldn't pull his punches with an audience present. Hell, I dare say when Luke was looking back and forth at his and Vader's cybernetic hands is just as impactful as the time Luke got his hand chopped off. Was it shocking when Vader maimed him? Yes. But there's not as much "gravity" to it because by that point Luke had already lost and Vader did it mostly to help his bargaining position (it's worth pointing out as well that Vader had no intention of killing him even before we knew his connection to Luke, which takes away *some* of the urgency of the fight), whereas here with Vader sprawled on the floor, defenseless after getting genuinely battered, Luke was clearly the victor and had to rein himself in lest he prove the Emperor right (on multiple levels even) if Luke allowed himself to be goaded into killing him.

The fight in ESB might have been more of an out and out slug-fest with less talking, but it was wholly one-sided and the weight of it doesn't even really hit until *after* the duel with the grand reveal. The ROJ fight is more evenly-footed and needed to be, considering all the luggage being carried into it, even post-lightsaber fight we had the biggest mental fight of the series with Vader's conflict.

It was always my favorite. That music after Luke screams "Never!" still gets me. It's awesome.

You don't have to be slick and fancy when you have emotion and drama in a scene. The problem with the PT is that the fights go too far in the opposite direction and are all sizzle and no steak. Even A New Hope's rather pitiful fight scene is better because of the drama.

I got that too. Luke was powerful than Vader, but he kept his power restrained. Luke unleashed his power when they tempted him to join the darkside. Then he saw his father's hand and looked at his own robotic hand and realized he was becoming his father.

Star Wars '77 is the best. Empire has better dialogue, better acting, better directing, and overall is a lot more polished. But the way that Star Wars managed to build a mythology from the ground up and capture the hearts of million is nothing short of miraculous. Empire refines what Star Wars does but in the end it's all based on the groundwork laid down by the first movie. There are so many little things--the music, the characters, the look, the sound design--it all came together to make a compelling whole. It took countless influences from older movies and puts them together to make something that felt fresh and new but familiar too.

Star Wars may be rougher around the edges but what it does well is an accomplishment that is unparalleled in cinema.

Empire Strikes Back is my favorite Star Wars movie, but the original is the best.

Honestly, I think you have it reversed. I think it was meant to show that, for all his hype, Darth Vader is a broken down old man doing the bidding of the Emperor and Luke didn't want to end up just like him. Hence, the spot with the robotic hand being severed. That's basically saying, "This is you in the future."

no, it's a pretty normal reaction to think the grown man in the robot suit lap dogging to the emporer and getting his ass kicked by his kid who's been in training for less than a year is pathetic.

For all the hype they gave Anakin in the PT, it absolutely fell flat.

Yes I know they came out after the OT, but they absolutely make Vader a worse character.

Jedi was my favorite as a kid. I don't know if it would be if I saw it now. I think it had the right tone for the series. I much prefer stuff like Jabba, the rancor, and the sarlac pit to a bunch of guys in masks and spaceships.

I'm definitely more a fan of the science-fantasy approach than the science-fiction approach. The sci-fi side still has a lot of cool stuff though like Vader, the AT-ATs, and the Death Star.

Yeah I think the music was all around hitting its best stride here.

Also the entire Jabba arc of the film was pretty sweet too. You have the Rancor, Bobba Fett, Leia coming at us as both a strong hero lead and fan service all in one package, etc.

Agreed 100%. However I think the Darth Maul one (and a lot of the fights in the prequels) are really overdone and unrealistic. I'm gonna get flak for this but purely fight wise the Rey x Kylo fight in E7 was the best.
